what kind of ppd could I expect from a quad core AMD cpu running the a3 client?
 
Depends. Which quad? OC'ed to 3.5GHz, a PII can get about 6-7000. At stock, depending on the SKU, I would say about 4-6000 ppd.
 
don't really know which one yet. I was planning to use a quad in my upcoming htpc build for the sole purpose of folding on it... but if the ppd isn't there, i'd just go for a dual core
 
Which AMD quad are you thinking of??

my athlon x4 620 gives between 3.3 and 3.8k at stock clocks while driving 3 nvidia GPU clients on a basic xp install
 
The Phenom II's are decent folders, but they're not Core i7s. Still, if you get a decent Phenom II and overclock it (I guess since this'll be an HTPC that's going to be quite unlikely, though...) then it should put out quite a bit of ppd.

oh it'll still get OC'd as i'm not anal about noise, i'll try and get a good low profile cooler for it eventually.

and i know it won't hold a candle to my i7 ;)

and if i end up buying new, it'll be the Athlon II X4 620. but hopefully i can find something better used

The 620 has now been replaced by the 630 and 635 but you may still find one, howver they are nt the easiest cpu's to over clock and the retail heatsink is useless. Your best bet would be to look for a PII used - try and get a C3 stepping chip as they run cooler

Another thing to consider would be an X6 if they are released soon

i was just going off newegg, but thx i'll look for 630's. And yea, ive been trolling the FS section here looking for good deals ;) and i'm trying to keep this below $500 :)

and if i'm going dual core, i'm not spending 120 on a CPU lol, so thats why i'm not going intel for this :)

You can use the exact same components you would use with a Athlon II X4 630 but you can get the two extra cores which should give it about the same performance as an i7 920 at the same clock speed for A3's. Places in Canada already have the 1055T (2.8GHz,125W) priced at $215CAN and the 1035T (2.6GHz,95W) should be cheaper (maybe $175US?). 3.5Ghz with reasonable temps should be possible and then you could get 10K ppd.

according to FAHSpy, my unlocked PII 720@3.2 will be getting 6.5k ppd once my bonus points kick in. Don't know if that's true or not but it makes me smile :D

Due to the nature of how turbo-boost works on the upcoming Thubans, I am willing to bet that they will overclock pretty darn well since each core must have to ability to run stable at speeds at least 500mhz over stock. It is a shame that at least 8 cores(virtual or real) is required to do -bidgadv's as I bet an overclocked Thuban should be able to do it.

For what it is worth, my Phenom II X4 965 slightly overclocked to 3.5ghz was getting a good 7-8k points per day running 24/7. I no longer use my gaming rig to fold now that I have a dedicated folding rig, but those are not bad points at all. I don't know if your cpu budget is hard or not, but would going with a Phenom II 955 be possible? The 955 is priced at $159 at Micro Center and is an unlocked black edition, which makes overclocking a lot easier. With a decent cooler, it should overclock pretty well.
 
Summary of this thread with some estimations:
athlon x4 630 2.8ghz: 4k ppd/$100 = 40ppd/$
athlon x4 630 3.5ghz 5.5k ppd/$100 = 55ppd/$
phenom 2 x4 3.5ghz 7.5k ppd/$160 = 47ppd/$
phenom 2 x 6 3.5ghz 11k ppd/$200 = 55ppd/$

The athlon x4 might fold better than that though so they might be the best way to go on a budget. Otherwise if you want more folding power you can get twice the ppd for twice the price. Your call, the electricity difference should be very small though so I'd go for the x6 and maybe stop folding on your gtx 260 to save power. Would save you about $100 in electricity over a year of folding while getting very close to the same ppd and the CPU would pay for itself.
