I read these forums more than I write on them. But I have a question that's eating away at me.
I just bought Age of Conan and the loading times are atrocious, as well as loading new textures.
These are the HDDs I have:
WD2500JS, 8mb cache, 8.9ms seek time, 7200rpm <-- Windows, AoC, etc. installed
WD2500KS, 16mb cache, 8.9ms seek time, 7200rpm <-- Ubuntu installed
....as you can see, no difference in the specs except the cache size....
Right now I am getting ready to reformat and reinstall AoC, but what should I do? I have two choices:
a) Reinstall Windows and AoC on the 16mb cache drive....or
b) Reinstall Windows and AoC on a Raid0 array, utilizing both drives but bottlenecking the 16mb down to 8mb...
So if I do a Raid0 with both my drives....the 16mb cache drive gets bottlenecked to 8mb since the other drive is 8mb, right?
Does that still make it worth it to set up Raid0? Or does keeping the 16mb cache drive on its own provide greater game performance? In other words:
(8mb + 8mb cache) > or = or < (16mb cache)?
I read that Raid doesn't serve too well in games and that buffer sizes are more important, so does that mean option A is best? Also, the game suggests setting a 4 GB static pagefile on a seperate drive, which I suppose is only possible if I go option A, lest I put the pagefile on the system drive.
