quick n dirty passive NB cooling

here is yet another CPU cooler modded to fit a chipset. our victim this time is one of those old microfin socketA coolers that came with the thin little green fan on top. you guys remember those right? they can still be found for about 4 bucks. rip the fan and shroud off, grind a semicircle in each side about 1/4" deep and either zip tie it on there like i did (the case it lives in has no window) or make a simple retention bar. i am idling at 24C and loading at 28C after an hour of prime95. CPU is a mobile barton at 2588 (225*11.5) so you know i am stressing the NB a bit at 225FSB. compund is AS5.

This worked out so well i am cutting the center channel in my stock A64 cooler wider so that i can put it on my AN8 and slip my VGA card in there. (damn card sits centered over the NB)

I used one of those for my *attempted* passive heatsink for my 9700pro... had to direct a 80mm fan at it cause it got too hot without. I "flowered" mine though, bent all the fins away from the middle and it worked pretty well. Let me see if I can find a pic... yeah, here it is.

this is just some spare parts i had lying around. it turned out so nice i think i am going to get a blue 80mm fan on the CPU and cut a winder on the side. i am seriously considering an EVGA dual tuner card right now for this thing. its is dead silent.

i like the idea of flowering the fins... i have tons of room there, just might try it. i dont know if i can beat my current temps tho. i never break 30C

EDIT: the USB card is there for the lianli card reader i have in the front. i lost the header connection cable but who dosent need 11 USB 2.0 ports anyway?

the heatsinks indeed are off of a Gainward Ti4600 Golden sample. the card itself is an abit Ti4600. the Gainward died and the fan on the abit died so.... you get the picture.
BTW: i would like to take this opportunity to say that the Antec BQE has got to be the best under $100 case for quiet computing. it comes with a super quiet 350W PSU rubber, isolators for the fans and HDD's, and just runs dead silent. I am starting to think that BQE stands for Big Quiet Enclosure. It is easily as quiet or more quiet than my Aria.

ok so i got the socket A HSF where it dont belong bug i guess. the VGA card from above just didnt fit into the whole scheme of things being purple and all, and that "stock" cooler was all of a sudden noticable (ok so i had to take the side panel off to notice). solution? this time it was a stock AMD cooler from a 2000+, a silverstone 60mm case fan, 4 zip ties, two holes, and an MSI Ti4800SE the fan is running at 7v and i could probably get by without it but i am the nervous type. i ran a temp probe over to the edge of the core and AS epoxied it into place. idle: 32 load: 43 ambient:26 (heat's on today). i have no clue what stock was but this has to better. i decided to do a small window... will update with pics of that tomorrow night if all goes well. untill then here is the beast with all 3 socket A heatsinks attached.

cleansed the eyes of offending wiring a bit more in anticipation of the window.

EDIT: the two very dusty cards that appeared are a TV WonderPro and a Live! 5.1. remember just spare parts ATM. prolly going to get a Hauppauge 550 later on down the road
