I currently have 512MB of PC2700 DDR RAM and am looking to upgrade. I was looking at OCing so I figured I would need PC3200 RAM to get the effects of OCing. I was reading the memory FAQ above and it said the total amount of RAM in the first 2 slots must equal the amount in the third. So that being said my new RAM will by Hyper-X 2*256 MB sticks of PC3200 RAM and the third slot will have my current RAM which will take advantage of the 128-bit architecture (as explained in the Memory FAQ). But the question I have is that the bus speeds between the dual channel slots and third slot arnt the same. My question is will this effect performance or as long as the Dual Channel modules have matching RAM sticks will it run fine??

Thanks in advance and sorry for posting ANOTHER RAM question but at least I dont think this has been asked before:)

OK I'm assuming this is for the machine in your RIG. DC doesn't mean that much, AMDs just are not starving for memory bandwidth like Intels, so adding DC isn't -that- benefitial. If I recall, adding a 3rd memory chip will reduce the performance boost of DC, because it now has to address the 3rd chip. Your still in DC mode, it's just not as fast. But remember, DC isn't that much to whoop and hollar about in the first place, so reducing something that barely benefits your system much doesn't mean that much.

You will get much better gains with having the extra RAM in a 3x512 or 3x256 vs. 2x512 or 2x256.

Why would you use a stick of PC2700 with PC3200? Theres no point if your going to overclock because the PC2700 is going to limit the PC3200.

Dual Channel isn't very important on AMD systems. It usually will net you a 2-3% performance gain.

The second channel is suppost to be the same size as the two DIMMS in channel 1 to get the best performance. It will still perform if the second channel is not equal but a little bit worse.

I really wouldn't bother with trying to enable it so just buy 512MB sticks.

Oh and forget OCing, unless your getting rid of that 2700 RAM. Your limited to OCing (by RAM) to the fastest speed of the slowest chip. So even though your adding 3200 RAM, you still have 2700 which will choke when OCed.

Thanx for your advice, now I gotta find someone whose interested in 512MB DDR PC2700 RAM.
