three cards are drawn from a standard deck of playing cards. in how many ways is it possible to get a combination with exactly one ace and one king
 
Well, by not taking Statistics or anything heres what im thinking

52 cards
1 king
1 ace
3 kings that cant be used
-3 aces that cant be used
44 other cards that can be in deal
 
there are 52 cards.
3 cards are drawn.
there are 4 kings.
there are 4 aces.
1/4 kings must be drawn.
1/4 aces must be drawn.
2/3 of the CD (cards drawn) must be 8/52 (K+A [Kings + Aces])
but ONLY 8/52...
or 1/13

so 1/13 is the chance of drawing a King or an Ace
so 1/26 is the chance of drawing a King.
so 1/26 is the chance of drawing an Ace.
so (1/26)+(1/26) + chance of not drawing a king or an ace.

chance of not drawing a king or an ace is 11/13

so 2/13...?

I believe you'll want to look up something called permutations. It's either them or Factorials that will give you the answer.

It's something like the total number of combinations, minus the number of cards drawn, etc (factorials of each quantity). It's been a few years since my Stat classes.

so it's 4(aces) * 4(kings) * 44(other cards) ?

well assuming that position doesn't matter there are 16 possible combinations of kick and ace which leaves the 3rd slot to be 44 possible variations of each of the 16 sets of ace and king making 704 combinations.

now how many combinations of 3 cards are there :p
 
Hang on one, I'll get your answer (Math major here... in a Probability class too :D)

Yeah, this is it. I don't have time to write it all out, but it ain't pretty.

It's something over (52 choose 1 + 51 choose 1). Working on a fast way for the top.
