My g/f had a dell laptop that overheated and got it replaced for free but kept the original hard drive from her original laptop. When she put her new hard drive in, she was unable to play her purchased songs in iTunes. A box came up and said she had used 2 of her 5 computers as she typed in her password to play the songs. The password and all worked but the songs were unable to play. How can she get her songs to work?

has the computer been authorized? under the "store" menu there is an option "authorize computer".

Yeah it says the computer is authorized and stuff and I do it again and it says like authorization successful or something like that and it will access the iTunes store and the songs wont play...

Any other ideas....

Everytime I click on a song it will like make you enter the password, load through the itunes store I guess and then say it was successful and then you would think you could play the song but you cant.

never had that issue. wifes & my new computers both authorized fine. u could burn songs to audio cd & then rip back, but that could be pita if she has lot of songs. may need to contact crapple.

Thanks but yeah that might take quite a bit of anytime but I appreciate the response....

Does anyone else know a better solution?

From the wording of your post, it sounds like you did not transfer files from the old hard drive to the one that came in the replacement computer. Understand that it is your responsibility to store the songs, that is not part of the iTunes service. (I think you knew that but I cant be sure from the wording) Its not like a 'ticket' to an online song, it is played from your hard drive.

A few no-brainers just to make sure to double check:
1. Try the 'check for purchases' option in store menu
2. Getting back to hard drives, make sure you authorize computer, and THEN import the audio. Sounds stupid, but I know people who said this has happened, I guess they have to point the files to the authorization, IDK.
3. If all that fales, you may try deauthorizing, then re-authorizing it. I have never done it, but you dont have anything to lose trying, I think.

itunes is looking for the files in the wrong folder.....delete you itunes library and reimport all the music, should fix it just fine.

I dont understand how if I delete the iTunes library folder, how am I going to re-import all of the music?? Any simple steps sorry I dont work with iTunes much, I am just trying to help her out!

No, remove your songs from iTunes & then just re-add them. Do not delete the exact folder they are in.

iTunes is finniky about this. You could import a folder from a hard drive full of music to the iTunes library, then delete IN the library window, and the files will still be on the hard drive. But there is a setting somewhere that can change this, I cant remember what exactly. It did it to me once with about 5000 songs, lol. Thats why I back up my files on at least 3 hard drives :D

Ok maybe im stupid but I translated some of your responses as deleting the songs out of itunes and keeping them in the same folder and then re-adding the songs.

However that did not work.

Let me know if im doing this wrong or if you have any other suggestions!!

Thanks alot,
Blake

Just to be clear, you are physically able to view a folder on your hard drive with all the songs? If so, (and assuming the previous suggestions didn't work) I would either delete iTunes and re-install it, or email their support. (I assume they have support, but have never emailed them myself...good luck with that). It sounds like there is a hang-up in their software that allows computers to be authorized.

Oh and you could try de-authorizing all the computers and then re-authorizing, starting with the laptop.

Yeah I already tried de-authorizing the computers, I have been messing with it for quite awhile now so I think im just going to get her to take it up to the apple store or e-mail the apple support like you said cause I dont want to risk having her lose all the songs that she has bought.
