I just installed the X-Connect 400W PSU to my computer and it smells kinda like it's burning...or the air coming out the back of it anyway.

I checked CPUZ but it has no readings on temps...is this normal for a new PSU? I also Installed a new A64 3200 with an arctic cooler freezer box. How can I check the temps on the cpu itself?

they are infamous for smell
that said so does any frying supply

its very likely a sloppy glue job burning off
but then again it could be something far more serious
in either event your best to get it vented out of the room

is there smoke?
or was there a flash or pop?

they arent considered a very high quality supply
if youll post your config I'll try to determine if its possibly overloaded

CPU: a64 3200 @ 2.2GHz
Mobo: Asus K8V Deluxe
Ram: 512MB OCZ premium ram
HD: 160GB Seagate Baracuda @ 7200rpm
PSU: 400W X-Connect
Gfx card: 9800 AIW pro
CPU Fan: Arctic Cooling Freezer box.

No overclocking done...also...how can i check cpu temps?

No flashing, smoke, popping or any of that.

Yeah..but I wanted to see them after playing something like HL2 also =/

Reads at 35 degrees Cel. idle. ram at 30 degrees...normal readings I guess.....so far my system seems pretty stable.

Can you recommend some good PSU's for me then? =)

you shouldnt be overloaded
even with a fairly heavy derating of the supply for temperature
your config isnt particularly power hungry on the +12V
realworld worsecase likely around 10 or 11A +12V

while the supply is at 19A even derated a third your at 12.6A
and your absolutely not pegging the CPU\GPU 100% right this instant ;)

its likely glue burning, sloppy assembly
as mentioned few now have much faith in the Ultra's
a few too many horror stories

well a great number of makes will power that config
what are you interested in?
Looks, sound, quality of power (overclocking)?
Infrastructure investment vs just this rig ect

I'd be interested in something at or below $100. I was looking at that Seasonic from the other thread, but i'm not to up on PSU specs.

For my system, I am looking to OC the video card, but not by much. I just want a stable running PSU. Mainly aimed toward quality. Do you think this 400W x-connect will do me fine without overclocking anything? I'm pretty sure 400W is all I would need for my current config, but i'm worried its going to die out.

well thats pretty hard to say
on the one hand its certainly within the capabilities of the supply's specs
on the other hand quality control and component selection isnt the best with those
they are mediocre to average supplies, Id feel a whole lot better about saying yes if you have an environmentally controlled room (AC in summer) and a UPS

your not especially taxing it so thats a plus
but when they have gone they've often taken components with them

because of my postition Im pretty conservative
if it was my box Id have to weight the risks based on what it might take to replace those components

on the gripping hand I have no reservations recommending Seasonics
or a great number of other supplies

weight that against this little tidbit though
the vast number of supplies out there are just this side of crap
they had an OEM's Electrical Engineer pick them out
as the cheapest supply that would power just whats in the box
for the warranty period, with an acceptable failure rate to maintain profitability :p

yet most of them are running just fine

he had all the info to do that though and we dont

LoL this is so hard on me because I'm not to aware on what is bad and good.

My room is always cold, regaurdless of the season haha. I do have a 500Va UPS from APC...and i'm actually thinking about getting a new case with more room, possibly the sidewinder...because my case feels like it's to small.

I guess I will stick with the X-Connect for now and upgrade in the near future once I get everything straight and increase my knowledge a bit.
