Guys i'm looking to transfer my boss' old info from old laptop to new one. I need a patch cable and my friend is borrowing mine, so i'm just gonna expennse one at the office. Now is it the 5e rj45 , the -e, the -5e rj45. i have seen thewse combinations. Now neither lap has a gigabit nic, or anything like that just a normal 10/100 port. Any help is appreciated from the gurus.

thanks :D

do you have the resources available to make a new cable? you would need some cat5 cable, 2 connectors a crip tool and 2 boots if you want them to look nice

there is how to do it the right way.

from that site do "a" on one end of the cable, and "b" on the other end and you will end up with a working patch cable :)

Thannks, i used to make cablle a lot when i woorked for an AV company, we did de'lls conference rooms, samsung's and comppaq's here in austin. I just forgot the proper name for the actual 2 way patch cable, not the normal ethernet cable.

not sure if im barking up the wrong tree but here goes!

the cabling is cat5e, and a 'patch' cable is used between nic's and hubs/switches ... a 'crossover' cable is used between nics ... which is what i think your after.

hth.

Don't waste your time on making your own cables unless you have the crimper and ends available. Just go buy a cable at a retail or online shop. Cat5 or Cat5e will both work fine, and both at 100 Mb. As mentioned, buy a crossover if you want to go from PC to PC, or a regular ole patch cable if your using a hub or switch. Your making it a bit too complicated. Besides the straight/cross parameter any cat5 cable you get will do the job.
