Howdy Folks,

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a question about firewire sharing. I bought a new pile of parts which have yet to arrive and the motherboard has firewire. My laptop also has it and i have a few external devices that i use with it. I have searched but have not found an answer: if i plug my firewire devices into a repeater and also both computers, can both computers use all of the drives? I plan on keeping a hard drive on it and would like to plug my laptop into the repeater to dump and take info from the hdd while the whole time the device is accessible on my desktop. Thanks for any help!

While *technically* possible to do this, it won't work with a standard file system like Fat 32 or NTFS. I suggest you use an Ethernet network instead; plug the two machines together and share the external drive that way.

Why can't you use NTFS? Both machines would assume that they are the exclusive owner of the disk, so they can foul each other up by changing on-disk structures and not informing the other machine they made a change. There do exist filesystems that handle this kind of conflict, but they're generally *nix-based or expensive. Sharing files over the network will be much simpler for you.
