The fan on my S1823 HSF is a 4pin fan that connects to the mobo's cpu fan spot. My mobo is a GA-P45-UD3P. Do I HAVE to have a fan connected in the 4 pin cpu fan spot on the mobo, for it to operate properly? Or can I throw on any 120mm 3pin fan and plug it into a fan controller?
 
no you dont have to.. but i would disable the automatic fan settings.. otherwise the bios can/might cause the fan speeds to change if you ran say a case fan off the cpu fan header.. but you can run any fan on any header.. if its on a normal header it will just run it at full speed.. but you can use a 4 pin on a 3 pin connector and you can use a 3 pin fan on a 4pin connector.. only thing the 4th pin does is allow the motherboard to control the fan speeds..
 
I have the same UD3P and Xiggy S1283. I'm using a 3 pin fan on the CPU header and using smart fan to control the speed via bios/ET6. You can use any 3 pin fan on the cpu header as long as you line the pins up correctly. Or you can not use a fan at all on the header(seems like what your asking), just make sure to disable the setting in bios for cpu fan failure warning
