I just got a simple question that I can't find the answer to with the search. I'm going to be getting either a 6950 2GB or 5870EF card. I have 3 monitors now, and running two video cards. 2 GTX460 actually but the SLI Hack for AMD motherboards is really buggy, and I'm maxing the 768MB ram pretty easily.

I know that I need an active displayport adapter since all 3 of my screens are DVI. But what about going from miniDP-to-HDMI? I have a DVI-to-HDMI cable that I could use. I doubt that it will work but I got to ask.

HDMI and DVI are effectively the same thing; one just carries sound.

I would recommend a 6950 over, well, anything, including the 5870 EF. AMD 5 series cards have too many architectural problems in Crossfire + Eyefinity mode.

Well you are right but in addition HDMI 1.3a and 1.4 have higher bandwidth than DVI and can offer more bits (48bits/pixel max) of color to your display and higher resolutions in one cable. However basic computer displays' HDMI interfaces can limit it to 1920x1200 resolution in many cases unlike your really high end displays. But they are almost nearly identical in function. I would opt to NOT use the DVI connector if you can I would use 2 DP and 1 HDMI with a 1.3a cable minimum. DVI will work but in theory you get better stuff going with HDMI.

depends on the resolution. Less then or equal to 1920x1200 you don't need active adaptors (im using 2 right now to power my 3x u2410s) if you cant afford active ones or don't want to use passive ones, get DP->VGA ones, apparently they work better? I don't know the exact details for that though...
 
so I don't need an active DP Adapter. Cool. It's 3 20in monitors at 1600x900. I'll post picks when I get it done.

This....it still need to be an active adapter..just not a dual link which are the costly ones.

Ive personally been running eyefinity for a little more then a year now and its great though ive got to buy the active DL adapters since im running at 1920x1200. If you have a DVI cable on hand, use that....if you have an HDMI cable on hand use that. It really does not matter as they are both the same thing. Sure, the latest spec of HDMI has higher bandwidth CAPABILITY, but that doesnt really improve anything when your working with a signal that adheres to a standard. Its like saying dropping a gallon of water down a 50ft diameter pipe is faster then dropping a gallon of water down a 25ft diameter pipe...bigger/faster doesnt mean anything here.


BTW: an HDMI cable is an HDMI cable is an HDMI cable....don't fret over not being able to tell if its a 1.3a "certified" or 1.4 "certified"....friggin' marketing hype.
 
ok, then I'm starting to go over my budget. I'm trying to avoid wife wrath, so for a 4800x900 setup, do yo think that 1GB will be enough? I don't really think so. I don't have to use AA either. The jaggies don't bother me much.

Go cf and if it invokes the wrath of your wife, tell her that it's a "future proofing" purchase since it will allow you to go longer without upgrading and that a new generation of graphics intensive games are coming. If she needs more you could show her a launch trailer of bad company 2 and then the latest battlefield 3 trailer...if she's a layman she won't know the truth lol.
 
true...but going with a 6950 will give you 1.5 times more vram over your 768meg 460s :D
