Hey everyone, well i just had a quick question about crossfire, which may sound stupid, but can you crossfire the same card from two brands if they're both running at the same clocks?

I'm asking since i was thinking about getting anther 4870 x2 for my new build, but i've noticed that VisionTeks are harder to find now and where they are available, they are about ~$100 more, so it would just be better to pick up a different brand.

Thanx in Advance :)

that works for sli
(in sli u can connect to different makes/brands as long as thier the same card)

yeah that will work no problems, i take it you're gaming at 2560x ? if you're not then you would be wasting the cash.

well as of right now im only gaming on 1280 x 1024, which i know, is putting no stress on this card.

But for my new rig, yes im getting a 30" monitor, and depending on how my 4870 x2 handles current games will decide if i get the 2nd, as im most likely going to upgrade to Tri or Quad SLI at the end of the year when nvidia's new series comes out, that is if it's better than anything ATI releases haha

I wouldn't be so hasty to say it'll work like a charm. I just went through the agony of troubleshooting my new cf set up. I had an HIS 4850 and just threw a powercolor 4850 in there. After two days of researching, updating, and scrubbing my software I had to flash the bios on my new card to get CCC to give me the option of CF.

Long story short, there ARE existing BIOS issues and many others that plague current CF setups. Unless you REALLY need that extra power, it's likely not worth the hassle. I reckon if you grab two card with the same bios you're more than likely OK, however I did come across a number of cases where two cards with the same BIOS issue were not communicating and couldn't run in crossfire until flashed.

thats wierd cuz im using a sapphire 4850 with an HIS 4850 and i have not had that problem

I game at 1650 x 1050 with a 4850 crossfire setup. Works great for me, playable with great visuals in every game I own, Crysis, Far Cry 2, etc.

I managed to beat all of my graphics intensive games, so I will keep this setup until there is a game that the setup can't handle. Currently playing Left 4 Dead and TF2 with around 100 fps, max settings 8xAA.

Let me correct myself and say that it's not necessarily likely that you'll have any issues, but it's a crap shoot - especially with powercolor. In fact, all of the BIOS issues i've read about have involved powercolor cards.

Theoretically you shouldn't have any issues whatsoever, but with all the hardware and software that's communicating (mobo, os, bioses, two gpus, etc) there's bound to be a handful of issues.

I had a 4870 X2 crossfired with a 4870 512MB and had no problems.

I had two 4870 X2s crossfired for a while, but they were both Sapphire.

Technically, there should be no problem using different brands.:D
