Quick but dumb question

Is it possible for your memory to be wonky, but still pass memtest86? I have been having issuses with my system but i thinkit's either the memory or the memory controller on the proc. I have tried both 2000 pro & XP pro so I knowit's not software based. Thanks in advance.

how many passes of memtest did you do?

does the cpu do at least 3-6 hours with prime95 small fft test?

I know it's possible, as I've had memory pass Memtest overnight but needed to be backed down a little to boot Windows. But in general if Memtest says it's okay, it's okay, and you should be looking elsewhere.

If it's overclocked, back down a little (or all the way to stock, seeing as this is for diagnostics) and see if that makes the problem go away.

If it's not, make sure drivers and such are up to date...could you be more specific abou the error/problem?

This post probably makes this the wrong sub-forum for this. I'll try to give as much info as I can remember anyways.

I bought my new gaming rig parts on 4-18. I recieved them on the 20th & built the system that night. I had recently bought 2k pro for $60 new (they probably made a backup for themselves before selling it, but I don't care. I got the legit disk & code). I got the latest revision of the mobo (DAMN), so I thought I would have gotten the newest driver disk with it.

Everything installed ok but I installed some drivers in the wrong order. Which led to an inability to run 3D Mark03 or 05 w/o crashing. Installed Quake3 demo for burn-in. It would eventually crash but not for about 1.5 hours of cycling demo1 & demo2.

I installed SC: Pandora Tomorrow for testing. I would play for about 5 miniutes or so, then get a BSOD saying something about a memory dump. I tried Guild Wars & get either the same BSOD or a hard lockup (no crtl+alt+del or alt+f2. I would have to use the power button to reboot) Swearing insued.

I checked my event log to find event id 1001. So after looking at the net for some helpful pages & finding nothing, I read through my mobo book again for something to try. I found that if you have doublesided memory (pc3200) in slots 1 & 3 running dual mode, they run at 333 instead of 400 if in 1T. In 2T they supposedly run 400 in 1 & 3. I had them in 2 & 4 at 1T (recomended setup) for that reason. I tried setting putting the memory in different slots but the mobo would berate me saying I shouold put my memory in 2 & 4. So I put them back in 2/4 & set the command rate to 2T.

I tried playing SC:pT again for about an hour w/ no crashes. When testing Guild Wars, it would either have the GW client crash (cannot read memory at whatever) or it would just reboot my system all together.

Arenanet (GW) releases a new client & and after installing it, I get assertion errors instead of mem read errors for 2 client crashes. Later w/o a client update it goes back to client mem read errors and hard lockup. I thought mabey 2k was the problem, so I borrow a copy of XP, for testing purposes only. Install, update XP and run GW to have it do the same thing only faster.

Other various things I've done are running CPUburn while I was sleeping & memtest86 while at work for burning in. Both would run w/ no errors. I have tried using AVG free instead of my copy of Norton. The event log shows event id 6005 & 6009. The only info I can find on those ids are on Windows NT Server & gives no explanation on what to do about it except read the .dmp file for driver info. I can't even seem to do that due to lack of a program to read them.

I am currently running prime95 small fft on it now. I have been running stock settings on everything in the system except then few different memory settings. As you can see, I'm having quite the conundrum. If anyone has any suggestions, I would be very greatful to you.

Everything stock, frequent crashes on a variety of games. BSOD which is frequently either driver issues or memory problems.

Try the following...

Flash the 3/10 BIOS for your Ultra-D. It helped me with a bunch of things.

Incidentally, the Ultra-D doesn't seem to like when you have a USB keyboard/mouse on a PS2 adapter plug, if you have any just plug them straight in as USB devices. If you have a spare PS2 keyboard, keep it around though...if your USB devices aren't being detected over a BIOS setting or whatever, you'll need it to fix them before you can use the USB keyboard.

I'm doing fine with the drivers off the CD, but I think there are newer ones out for various things (I'm using some betas for my video card from Guru3D anyway...update yours, it is crashing during games after all). It shouldn't matter THAT much what order you installed them in.

Go into the BIOS, Genie menu, scroll down just off the bottom to set Memtest = Enabled, reboot, let it run. It's quite possible one of your memory modules is bad - if so, Memtest will almost certainly find out.

Your sig lists Corsair Value Select...there have been problems with that recently, especially on the DFI motherboard. If you have something else handy, swap it and see if the problem goes away...if not, Memtest will probably throw a fit anyway. There's a bunch of stuff over at DFI-Street.com on the issue (and damn near everything else...RGone has a guide or two on getting your NF4 Ultra-D up and overclocked).

What has 2 thumbs & is a freakin tardo?
(points at self with thumbs) this guy!

I had heard about the release ofthe 3/10 bois while I was researching the parts for my system. Of course for some reason, I forgot to check to see if I had the 3/10 or an older one. Because I'm an idiot. I have it flashed and let GW run, on it's own, for about 19 hours now with exactly zero crashes now.

My most sincere thanks to you for helping me to eradice 1 more bit of stupidity from my head, ashmedai. Now, hopefully, I will remember to check the bios when I'm having problems.

Just as a side note, is 9 hours and 40 minutes good for small fft prime95?

Some people like to let it run much longer, but that's more than long enough to make sure your CPU is stable.
