So I have the ATI 3870 right now. Would it be possible to get the 4850 or 4870 and crossfire it with my current card. I just would like some thoughts on that.
 
Yes, but I was told it the 4850 or 4870 would only perform as fast as the 3870 so not really worth it. You would be better off to just get another 3870. But don't get either if you don't have a mb with 2 16x PCI-E slots because you won't get full performance otherwise.
 
Not entirely sure, but even if it was possible it would only run as quickly as the slowest card, so it would be like having 2x 3870's

The 4870 blows the old 3xxx range out of the water anyhow, just getting a 4870 will be a decent upgrade, especially if you use AA
 
thanks guys, I think ifI get another I am going to go for another 3870 considering itas only $130 on tiger right now.
 
I read that it wouldn't work, but it was from a semi-reliable source (theinq or fudzilla or similar). Maybe i'll try running the HD 3870 and HD 4850 in the same system this weekend if I can't find a definitive answer before then.
 
There's no point in getting another 3870, you'd be better off spending a few dollars more and getting a 4850.

dontits not worth dealing with scaling, microstuttering issues a 4850 would be a huge upgrade and the 4870 would be better than the 3870crossfire. just sell your card and put that money towards a 4870 (bestbuy 300-10%=270)
 
Depending on the resolutions and games, a single 4850 is often competitive with a 3870 Crossfire, so a 4850 would be a much better buy than another 3870, especially as you can get 4850s for ~$150 with a bit of looking. Plus it gives you the option to get another 4850...

I wasn't talking about crossfire with the 3870/4850, just a single 4850. A single 4850 will be very competitive with 3870 crossfire.

i never said you were i told him not to get another 3870 and just to get a single 4850 or a 4870 and sell his old 3870
