Quick ATi driver issue on a mobile machine

So i just got a new ThinkPad T60 and was thrown to the red side (had been an nVidia guy before.) I'm not used to solving stupid little issues with the Catalyst drivers as I am with the nVidia counterpart, so I need your help:

I need the blasted system tray menu to remain in the tray! I click "Enable System Tray Menu" in the preferences drop-down list and it works; however, if I restart, it needs to be done again. This is pretty tedious... I need that item to switch mobile profiles.

In fact, no settings get remembered in the Control Center. I am bitterly dissapointed.

Using: 128mb X1400 Mobility, Driver Version 8.204, Control Center version 1.2.2180.

Please tell me there's some stupid little thing I'm missing, cos this is pissing me off.
 
For mobility ATI cards (my current laptops have mobility 9700s) I ALWAYS use the omega drivers.
The official ATI drivers always cause problems and issues on my laptops, I install the omega drivers and the problems all go away.

Hey, sorry for not responding in a while, and also sorry for being a bit grumpy in my first post. I was having a bad day.

Is there anything short of using unofficial drivers that you guys could think of to solve this? maybe some stupid "save settings" button which I've overlooked? it seems a bit silly that the ATI taskbar icon isn't staying put.
