I was curious as to what core I had so I removed the HSF so I could take a look. In the process though, I didn't realize my finger smudged a little Artic Silver on the side of the core onto the rest of the CPU. My friend was telling me if you do this and try to wipe it, you may end up damaging the chip. Is he right? What is the best way to clean it off, rubbing alcohol?

Yes use alcohol and a cotton swab. Gently brush away the thermal material. Do not saturate the chip.

Denatured alcohol is the way to go. Which thermal paste was it? Arctic Silver 5 and Ceramique are non-conductive so I wouldn't worry about it in that case.

I think it's AS II. I got most of it off and it seems to be running fine. Actually got it to run cooler after actually putting the AS on correctly.

I need to reapply mine. I have AS3 and it worked great for a few months.. after about 4-5 months the temps started rising.. it used to idle 39*C but now its 45*C.

AS5 is silver based so it is "semi-conductive", but only a little so I wouldn't worry about it :)

Do not use a cotten swab. The fibers will get everyone on the chip. Use a coffee filter or something like that.
