Well, I need to know if ATAPI uses the same connectors as regular IDE.

for instance, if you put an ATAPI connector next to an IDE connector, would you be able to tell the difference?
 
So, it uses a regular 80/40 IDE Cable then?

Another thing, does the motherboard have to support it specifically?
 
ATAPI is a protocol extended from ATA that would work with devices other than hard drives, like removable storage devices and optical disc devices.

Optical drives are ATAPI devices and currently use regular PATA cables. They don't have to. There will be SATA optical drives later.

I believe the ATA controller must be new enough to support the ATAPI protocol. However, any remotely modern computer will support ATAPI devices.

YES, it does use a standard IDE cable (didn't you go and read anything at the site I linked you to?)

Pretty much any mobo that's newer than a 386...486 and above, with a built in IDE controller will support it, yes.

By the way, I did read that site, but it didn't tell me anything about connecting ATAPI devices. Just all sorts of technical specifications and the history of ATAPI and crap like that.
