Hello, I'm going to be building my first computer soon, and I decided to go big on the monitor... 37 inches big, anyways, was curious if this would affect my video card/system. Will I need to Crossfire my graffix cards to get good quality? I'll be playing Mostly Video games and some video editing...
The system I'll be running:
Conroe e6700
WD Raptor Raided
2gb's memory
watercooled
X-fi platinum
2 graffix cards (haven't decided on them/how many)

Anyways, what type of card would you guys suggest,
This is the T.V I'm gonna buy all details on it are on here >>> http://www.amazon.com/Vizio-L37-136...I7VSM/ref=sr_11_1/104-3240073-7406338?ie=UTF8
Any Info/ Feedback would be greatly appreciated (constructive criticism please) IF you think I need to beef up my comp, or I don't need certin things by any means state it. Also was going to just run an S-Video cable to it from my comp, unless there is a better way or cord to connect with.

Thanks for your time, and any info you guys provide!

Resolution is the only thing that will place burden on your system. The TV could be 100" and that won't have any correlation to stress on the system.

The resolution of that TV is very low by computer standards 1366x768. Most users whom use their computers with TV's would prefer something with 1080p (1900x1080). I can tell you right now that 37" of real estate on that low of a resolution will be frustrating at best. Most 20" Widescreen LCD's these days still have a higher resolution of 1680x1050.

Also I would highly recommend you use some other connection method other than s-video. S-video will only allow 480i or 576i resolution which is even lower than the resolution than your monitor is capeable of displaying. I highly recommend using DVi or if your video card(s) support it you could use HDMI.

If you're really obsessed with having a monitor this big there are many users using the Westinhouse LVM37W3.

This monitor/TV can be had for significantly less than Amazon's price. In fact in the hot deals subforum the 42" version of this monitor could be had for 1.5k and included a free HtiB system. Here's a link to that thread:

Other options include Dell's 30", Apples 30", or now HP's 30". They aren't as large as the Westinghouse display, but they offer significantly higher resolution which would make good use of an expensive Crossfire, or SLi setup.

Well that depends on your budget and your flavour.

7950GX2 is the fastest cards you can pair for Team Green.
and
x1950xtx is the fastest cards you can pair for Team Red.

Buying two of either will set you back about 1k. However a new generation of cards is quickly comming arround the corner, so unless you're an upgrade whore or you 'need' a system now, it's probably more prudent to wait a few months.

I'm assuming you talking about ATI and Nvidea. any ways I was leaning towards the ATI x1950xtx

Also I was looking at the Westing house on Amazon.com, and the response time for it it says 12ms, but on newegg the same one is only 8ms. I'm praying it's only 8ms but not sure, could you confirm?

thanks for all the help, really appreciate it.

EDIT:: just saw this article, sorry I had tunnel vision when I saw the Westinghouse :-(

Well the Westinghouse is the best of breed in that line and type of monitors. I have been concidering buying one for sometime, but I think I'm going to wait for SED to become more prominant and invest in that instead. I'm guessing we'll see sets in 1st or 2nd quarter of 2007 (unless even more stalling occurs). Of course buying something massive like this isn't high on my priority list, since I'm more into upgrading audio (for now).

And yes the x1900xtx will power the Westinghouse fine at least for games right now. DX10, Vista, and even faster Hardware will change all of that however. Like I said, since you're into ATi, it might be a good idea to wait for R600.

I'm using the 42" but I do get some banding. Might just bring it back and spend more money. I tried to have the one size fits all display. But, I might have to get the 37 westy for the computer (no reports of banding), and then for a big TV just worry what's good at being a TV. I'm using crossfired x1900XT which still might be an option for need now guys. Only about $600 or so now. Hey, might not be chump change but that's the kind of territory you are in. I don't know anyone whose gone through this for 1366*768, just a behemoth of blockiness for PC games, in front of them.

something that size w/ only a 1366x768 resolution would result in a considerable amount of screen door if you sit too close.
i've used a 1366x768 30-inch and it was unbearable as a desktop monitor (meaning about 3-4 ft from your face).

but if you go 1920x1080 - that would be a different story.

still too big IMO as a desktop monitor but if you're going to go big, you have to reduce the pixel size and increase number of pixels

eh an upgrade now is worth 2 in the future i would say. If you have the money now, get it. Buy the time you really outgrow the x1900 the r600 will be old news and the new badass tech will be here. its usually a few months at least before the first game is released using the new DX engine, by the time more games require DX10 the DX10 cards will be priced better.

My opinion is why wait for the next new thing if we all did that we would live our lives waiting. By the time DX10 cards are out someone will be saying "dont buy them the GDDR5 cards will be here soon" etc. etc.

And on top of that it seems microsoft isnt going to release DX10 for XP, so you would have to buy Vista and a compatible card. i would just wait on DX10 cards, let the early adapters go through that hell.

I agree to a certain extent, but the op hasn't really talked about a whole lot in terms of budget. It just seems to me that G80 and R600 are going to bring more to the table than a simple clock speed boost that most 'refresher' cards would bring. Both of them should be built from the ground up.

It's very notable to mention that even though the R600 is built to be able to do things for DX10 it should be able to do DX9 things very well.
