This thread is not meant to start a flame war about which is better! I am just a bit confused by [H]ard's latest review of the X850. www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=Njk3 Quoted from review: "Make no bones about it, the X850XT-PE can easily best the NVIDIA 6800Ultra in many of today’s latest 3D gaming titles, and Catalyst driver maturation is evident in these latest evaluations. And while it does fall a bit behind in DOOM 3, it hardly delivers anything close to what could be described as “bad” performance. Still, at a suggested retail price of US$549, the Radeon X850XT-PE should give you nothing less than the ultimate gaming experience in every gaming title." It would seem that the X850 series is just increasing on a lead that the X800 XT PE already had. It just doesnt seem to remain consistent with other vid card reviews done by Brent and Kyle. Meaning the 6800Ultra was the overall best performer. The X850 surpases the X800 by only a few frames per second and yet it easily best's the NVIDIA 6800Ultra in many of today's latest 3D gaming titles? Sure the Cat's have gotten a bit better, but this is supposed to be as a result of magical driver maturation?

We have all heard statements like the Nvidia is better at OpenGL games and ATI at Direct X throughout forums. How many OpenGL games are there really besides Doom 3? It seems as though there are twice as many Direct X games than OpenGL. Also what are your thoughts on the next generation cards? We know that they are likely to sport 512mb of memory, will they again double performance?

I'm confused about that statement that they released ... It looks like it was written without putting much thought into it.

It's obvious that ATi has a lead in DX games and it is true that most games released are DX but when it comes to OpenGL I believe the 6800 Ultra is a winner.

So if you're going to invest into something for the future the clear choice would be an ATi card .. since most of todays games and tomorrow will be DX games if this trend continues.

As for 512mb video cards. I wouldn't expect them to be released yet. You also have to consider the pcb size if more memory is introduced. More memory also sometimes means not good performance. So they have to research that for a while.

I believe when they talk about 512mb video cards they're talkin about nVidia's SLI ...

If ATi releases a dual core on a pcb then the 512mb would be perfect allowing better performance although it would be too heavy on the pcb ...

A lot of things have to be considered.

Those are just my thoughts. :)

ATI has a significant lead in DX9 games that make use of a lot of shaders. However, when you're comparing the X800-XT/PE to the 6800U there are a few things to keep in mind.

First, most DX games aren't up in the rarified air of Far Cry and Half-Life 2. Second, even for those games, simply put, both cards provide an outstanding experience.

However, the deltas are indicitive of the architecture and will likely translate into meaningful differences in the midrange and low-end cards. The HUGE caveat there is that the 6800GT and X800Pro are not truly peers due to the different number of pipelines. Below that level though, things appear to be working back towards a degree or parity where I fully expect ATI to continue to hold a DX9 w/shaders lead over Nvidia.

If you're buying a top of the line card, you can't really go wrong on either side of the equation. Both the 6800U and the X800-XT/PE are going to provide great gameplay and will likely move much of the bottleneck in performance to various other parts of your system.

For my part, I still think that the 6800GT is far and away the best bang for your buck on the planet right now.

No one has ever argued that point, it is clearly obvious.

BUT if you talk about performance and luck I think the X800 Pro VIVO is the best bang for the buck since unlocking them provides PE clocks and higher for the more daring of us

imo i think the 6800 NU is the best bang for buck if u can unlock the pipes/shader. ofc 6800 GT is too but this is my opinion. i mean 210 bucks(BF CUSA $10 is tax) for a 6800 nu vs a 6800 GT for 190 more. thats like 2 cards.

That's my point though. There are far more Direct X games than Open GL, and alot more on the horizon. So the X800 series is going to perform better at the majority of games then?. Not that I'm complaining about the performance of my Ultra, it's very fast but I bought it based on the many reviews that [Hard]Ocp wrote on the subject. Claiming the Ultra was the way to go. The X850 is simply building on a lead the XT PE already had according to thier latest review. Seems like a change of tune, claiming now that the Catalyst driver set has made some miraculous gains. I'm just not buying it. Also, what do you all think we are likely to see from the next genertation of cards?
