i want to upgrade my htpc since moving to vista and other performance reasons, but ive been out of the hardware loop for a while. the last time i really got into this stuff was during the athlon xp days when the barton 2500+ was the best thing out. anyways my plan is to go dual/quad, but im not even sure if doing this will allow me to do everything i want to do w/o any performance hits. ive never used a multi core before, so my questions may sound noobish. the primary use of my htpc is to record/watch hdtv. i also use my 360 as an extender in my bedroom, and the comp has all of the music, movies, videos, etc on there being streamed to various sources. every once in a while i get some stuttering and checking task manager shows the cpu maxed out. i also use a program to remove commercials from shows which also eats up a lot of the cpu, making it somewhat hard to do anything else. also when hd-dvd/blu-ray drives drop in price i want to pop 1 in there for a 2nd player for the house. lastly id like to do some gaming (crysis, ut3, flight sim x, etc)....all at the same time. currently my htpc has a 3400+ venice in it

i know the best bet is to have a htpc and a gaming rig, but id really prefer to only have 1. so with that being said heres my questions:

1. Is it possible to do all of the above at the same time w/o the making the pc crawl to a hault?
2. When assigning a process to a core, will vista remember to keep it on that core after a reboot/shutdown? or will it all just go back to being used on the 1st core?
3. if i start a 2nd instance of an app, will it run on the same core, it will it be moved
3. will vista x86 properly use all 4 cores? someone told me vista isnt quad aware. i think its bs but i figured id ask.
4. Is quad even necessary to do this much multi-tasking or is will an e660 and a good oc be enough?
