I have ordered the Asus P6T6 WS board, and a 920 proc to go with it. I have never done an OC before.

1) What is the best air cooler?

2) Can someone point me to some good information on how to OC these?

3) I dont know/understand the memory situation. It says that it supports all these different speeds of RAM up to like 2100 but it has " (OC) " next to all of them.
Does that mean that I must OC for that ram to function? or I just must OC for it to function at that speed?

i have the p6t deluxe and it offer setting the mem from 800 to 2000mhz in the bios just dont go above 1.64 volt on dram or you well get an warning message

HardOCP thinks its the Thermaltake TRUE and honestly from the measurements it is one of the best. You will need good fans for it though. I have a Noctua SE1366 which is pretty nice because it is pretty silent but gets a little less performance than the TRUE.

2) I dunno if the WS board BIOS is the same as the deluxe Board BIOS but http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2008/11/06/overclocking-intel-core-i7-920/3 seems to have a pretty good guide and explanation. Ive started out with this and lowered voltages and frequencies to what i felt I wanted to keep as a 24/7 rig.


For 3 I know a little and I might be wrong but:

If you are using air cooling then 4,0 ghz will probably be the max you will want to go because of such massive heat production. these run hot because of the integrated memory controller. That website I linked to has it so you can set it up to 4.0. I myself have it to 3.8 and at these speeds 1600 RAM is fine.

Higher clocked RAM is for going for a higher CPU clock or if you want to run these at a higher memory speeds. From what I've seen there are only improvements in synthetic benchmarks when running higher clocked RAM. 1333 is the maximum supported RAM that the Core I7 officially supports but the motherboard can run these clocks these higher. From what I have read there isnt much real improvement in getting higher than 1600 or even 1333 because it only increases bandwidth and not performance.

from what I've seen and read, all 300 dollar+ boards OC within error margins. So its about the same. Depends on your favorite retailer
