Questions on 3870

Just receivied my Diamond 3870. Installed ok. Questions - Is it normal for the 2d clocks to be 300 and 1126? When in 3d it does jump to 777 and 1126. Also, I have never used Rivatuner - but can you set 2d clocks? I run a certain game in windowed mode and 3d clocks never kick in on windowed mode. Question 3 - I am using CCC right now and if I set anything in memory above 1126 and use the custom test in CCC it fails. Lastly - I had a 1900XTX with a Thermaltake AT1 on it. It was quiet running 100% - would that work on the 3870.

Thank You in advance :)

I don't run 3D games in windowed mode, so can't tell you what's normal in that case. However ATITool's Furry Cube windowed test definitely activates the 3D core and heats the GPU up.
The 2D speeds are normal since that's how the GPU saves power. It's been used in ATI's mobile GPUs for years and has just been implemented for ATI's desktop GPUs starting with the HD38xx.

The stock fan control settings are definitely set for low noise. With the latest version of ATITool (0.27 Beta3), the fan control of the HD3870's works most of the time on my 64bit Vista setup and allows, from what I can figure, 5 speed settings, 0, 25, 50, 75, 100 percent. At 100 percent the fan sounds like a hair dryer. I've *never* heard the fan spin up to even 75% without using ATITool even when GPU temperatures are close to 90 degrees Celsius.

I've settled on overclocking my HD3870 to 850 core and 1251 memory. It goes unstable not much higher than that. The auto overclock setting in CCC always crashes my video card, so I could not use it. And the "test" it runs is not reliable in detecting errors. The Furry Cube test in ATITool is much better since it allows you to *see* memory errors.

"just over clock the 2D mode to 3d speeds." - That's what I want to do but have never used Rivatuner or Attool. I am sort of lost here

Thank-You,
Ted

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought the new 7.11 drivers fixed the 2D/3D clocks?
