Questions for 23" LCD Gaming

I am looking at buying either the HP or Sony 23" 16ms LCD. My only concern is the native 1920x1200 resolution.

Even though I plan on getting a high end video card in the future I know I won't be able to play all my games at 1920x1200, how do the games look when they are not in their native resolutions on these monitors? What if you play 1600x1200, do you get blackness on both sides of the screen?

Because of these reasons I am thinking about getting a 20.1" Dell 2001FP or the ViewSonic.

Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I would imagine that you would have to make do with black bars on the sides...Even if you can scale it up with a zoom/stretch mode like with hi-end tube HDTVs, I wouldn't do it because LCDs will look much better at a native resolution (or at least 1:1 pixel ratio) than through any kind of interpolation or stretching.

I've tried UT2K4 on both the Sony and the Apple at 1600x1200 and 1024x768 and 600x800 and I think it's fine. You can definitely tel it's running at a lower resolution and interpolating based on the jaggedness of diagonal edges, but if you turn AA on that should minimize this problem.

Additionally, you can change the fov setting in UT2K4 to offset everything being wider when you stretch a 3:4 image onto a 16:10 panel... not all games have this kind of feature, but I'm other FPS games do as well...

But then, personally, I think those games are more about finding the enemy asap and shooting them vs admiring the scenery =P

Sell your grannie and get a 6800 ultra or X800 XT. Then play all games at 1920 and be blown away !

I play doom3 at 19020 and it is somethign special. Same for Farcry and UT2004. A few older games won't run at this res but most scale very well. Strangely upping the AF settings and scaling sometimes causing rather ugly textures but in most games that I am forced to play at less than native res it is hardly noticeably at all.

Yea i play at 1920x1200 on my 23" HP but i dont run AA. At that res it really isnt necessary. There are some jaggies but theyre very small and not noticable unless your really looking for them.

-loGan-,

I went ahead and got the Sony P234B and I've been testing it and the Apple 23 inch LCD side by side all weekend long... Just curious, how bright do you run your Apple 23? What have you done about the red push?

Does anyone know any retail stores that have both the Sony 23" and the HP 23" for display? I am interested in seeing both side by side - would be nice if they had the 16ms 20.1" lcds there too..
