I'm looking to replace an aging Dell system and want something top of the line. I've been looking at VM, been through the website and read a ton of reviews most all of which seem quite favorable. I must admit I'm confused by a number of things.

It would seem that for these reviews most all of the systems are overclocked. Can you purchase an overclocked system from VM? Specifically the Raptor DCX and the Gamers Edge PCX are of interest but I see no mention that they can come overclocked. If you can't get them that way how difficult is it to OC them myself?

Along a similar vein I've seen posts by Mr. Morley regarding his preference for the nvidia 680 chipset yet this isn't an option on the Raptor. Should that be viewed as a reason to go with the Gamers Edge since it has the evga MoBo?

How much of a pain would it be to start with one 8800GTX and add one down the line?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. There are so many great choices out there and I just don't want to make the wrong one.

The bios is unlocked so it should not be very difficult to Overclock, check the overclocking forum for more detail, as for getting one factory oced, I don't think so. The Raptor apparently has the badaxe mobo, which does not appear to support SLI, so if you get the pcx with the 680i you will be able to add another 8800 later. Not sure on how the upgrading works, it probably shouldn't be any problem at all. As for the motherboard I've heard nothing but good things about the 680i.

Our Raptor Signature Edition is overclocked at the factory - in fact, my team actually signs off on the final build - along with Randy.

And yeah, I love the 680i, and if you're not going for the Signature Edition, you can build up the Gamers' Edge PCX pretty darn close to it - minus RAIDStorm...and it's nice and easy to add that second 8800 GTX - we recommend a 1KW PSU though.

Well, I also have a few questions about VM, sorry for not posting in another thread (My reasoning is that this might affect the poster too.)

What's the difference between the Classic and the Signature case? I mean, there are obvious visual differences, but my concern is about noise, quality, and the like. Would there be any disadvantage to using the cheaper case?

Again, sorry about posting in this thread.

I presume you're asking about the LX vs. the GX? They are both very quiet. Personally, I have the "cheaper" GX under my desk at work, and while the LX holds more drives and opticals, the GX is every bit as well-made, and neither are loud at all.

If for some crazy reason I would want to overclock my computer, say when the warranty were to expire would the water cooling be a better idea? How about the ram? Below is the system I was thinking of ordering any input would be greatly appreciated.

We don't recommend overclocking a QX6700 with the LiquiCool 3. Overclocking 130w is a lot for it to take, but it does great with 65w Conroe parts. We will have a new cooler that will allow for excellent Quad overclocking in about a week.

Do you have more information about this new cooler? Like the OP, I am planning on overclocking the QX6700 sometime in the future. Right now I've already placed my order, but with the LiquiCool3. How much more cooling is the new cooler capable of compared to LiquiCool 3? Is it worth putting my order on hold for the new cooler?

Alright, thanks a lot! :D I guess I'll still be getting a LX-W. Looks nicer.

To be quite honest with you, you can not overclock at all with the LiquiCool 3 on the QX6700. With the new cooler (tentatively called the LiquiCool 3 Pro,) you can overclock to at least 3.46GHz - if you'd like to hold off, call sales and we'll make sure to take care of you.

FYI, the LiquiCool 3 Pro will be around $140 more than the LiquiCool 3 - it'll have twice the cooling power.

Also, we're getting a limited amount in this week, so if you'd like to "reserve" a spot, make sure to call ASAP.

Now why did you guys have to go and offer a new cooler, I had just finished making up my mind about what I wanted in the Gamer's Edge that I was going to order.

I was configuring a Gamer's edge just yesterday, seeing the prices, when I noticed that the media card reader was the same price as the floppy only. Was this a typo? Also, why do the ATi cards reduce the return period from 3 days to 30 days. And who makes the ATi Cards?

Sorry for seeming annoying. It's just nice to upgrade from P4 1.7 and 256 RDRAM. :D

Dark Atom, I was reading your sig, and you have a pretty good computer there. How's the quality of the Dell build?

The XPS 700 is a solid gaming system and not to metion pretty heavy. The internals are pretty well kept in that wiring is kept out of the way but not entirley out of sight like velocity micro. Sound wise, it's pretty quiet even though it has two large 120mm intake fans. The only downside to the system is the upgradability. Given that it includes a btx motherboard, your upgrade options are pretty much zip, nada. Thats why im looking into getting a Gamer's Edge for myself.

So for how much longer are you guys at Velocity Micro planning on keeping and using the Evga 680i motherboard ? I only ask because upon reading many reviews towards that board there seems to be some issues with it. Is each motherboard tested carefully to avoid known issues ? Or will the Asus Extreme be used in the future ?

We've had a lot of success with this board and have had strong support from EVGA. I'm not certain we'll be changing it anytime soon.

Plus the Asus board is like $400 and doesn't add that much.
