I'm thinking about making the jump to a 120/144Hz monitor (maybe the Swift). I know the high refresh rates offer "smoother" gameplay, but what is it like if you are not maintaining 120 or 144 fps?

Here's why I ask- Anytime I go under 60fps I can immediately see/feel it. Seriously, I drop one frame and I feel lag. (Maybe it's some SLI stuttering? But doesn't that only occur when you go over x frames in x Hz, not under?)

Now lets look at consoles. Most games are locked at 30fps and when I play them on the same display, it feels fine-ish. It's certainly not as smooth but it doesn't create that same type of chunkyness that I get if I drop to 59fps.

So back to my initial question, will anything less than 120 or 144 fps give me that same kind of feeling? Or will I still maintain that normal 60fps smoothness as long as I am above 60 fps and anything higher than 60fps will be displayable?

I am the kind of person that likes to max games out so upgrading my GPUs will probably come during Maxwell gen 2. Maintaining that high framerate while maxed out is definitely a concern of mine and a pair of 980's doesn't seem enough.
 
What you're seeing is the problem of dropping under the refresh rate when using V-Sync. If you turn V-Sync off, then dropping to 59 fps for one frame will not be as noticeable. With V-Sync on and with a single slow frame, the update will effectively drop to 30 fps for a moment (causing the chunkiness). G-Sync should pretty much solve this. Just make sure you get a G-Sync compatible monitor.

Right. But the only 120+Hz, 1440p, G-Sync monitor available is the swift unfortunately. What is it like having a framerate of under 120 fps when you're running at a high refresh rate?
 
When you have under 120FPS with V-Sync disabled, games will not have drastic FPS drops, so you will not notice it as much as you are now.
 
144Hz make itself difference in framerate much less noticeable. G-Sync solves stuttering caused by dropping below refresh rate completely.

What is wrong with Swift?
