I've been looking recently to invest in some better speakers, perhaps bookshelf ones. I'm currently using Gigawork T40's with a Z2300 sub and am under the impression a decent bookshelf pair would be a lot better. The questions I have are:

1) What would be considered the a good price range to start with. I'm thinking of spending up to $500 on 2.0/2.1 with a receiver. I'm may also upgrade to 5.1 in the future so I would like to have doors open.

2) Would 2.1 be a better choice than 2.0 for a small(er) setup? I can definitely use a sub but the question is at the price range of ~500, would buying a sub reduce the quality of the speakers considerably?

3) I live in Canada, and ordering online is possible, but not the easiest option for me. Would this limit my ability to purchase the setup? Are prices significantly different from the US?

Thanks for any help.

Canada? Look into some Paradigm or Totem speakers. You should be able to score some used on audiogon or craigslist b/c both speakers are canadian made. Same for receivers. Get the best speakers that you can afford and a receiver like a Denon, Pioneer, Panasonic XR55-57 or Yamaha. Feel free to ask us, "Is this a good deal?" You can pm me if you want. Glad to help.

Thanks a lot. Would you suggest both a receiver and speakers used? For instance, would it be better to buy a used receiver off of audiogon rather than a new one on sale?

Also, I'm unfamiliar with prices on audiogon. Should I look for prices rather than certain models? I'm not too certain how models differ.
