As a n00bie to this forum, I have a few questions and wonder if you can enlighten me.

Also - Moderator's please do not move this thread to a forum where I cannot post, such as For Sale. It would really be a big time bummer for me. :eek:

1) n00bies - What is the biggest issue you have with n00bs here at [H]? I mean, is it posts that are really uninformed, posts that are irrelevant to the discussion; posts that show the n00b has a tendency to be a PITA; or is it something else altogether?

So really what is your advice to a n00bie on how to be less than a n00b and more like a beginner who is learning?

2) Trolls - How do you recognize trolls in this forum? What can be done by people like me who are new, not to act like a troll and to gain respect and recognition by others as a generally okay forum member?

I ask because I have seen some of the advice sections in the FS/FT subforum and wanted to get more information and opinions from you folks so that I can be a better participant in these environs(in the forum in other words).

Z) Is there anything else you wish to impart to this new person; anything at all (Provided it is civil, please).

1) Only elitist pricks care about how long you have been here. If you try to pad your post count just to get into FSFT, the mods will just ban you, so even that is not really an issue to most.

2) Trolls are trolls. Some are more skillful than others, and can stir the honrets nest up without raising too much suspicion, but most of them are pretty obvious. Leave them to their thing, or play with them. Just be mindful of the forum rules or they will bite you in the ass.
 
If you know you're posting something in the wrong area, don't post it. You can PM a mod and ask for advice. Had you done that one of us would have told you that anyone can post in the Tips, Tricks, and Trolls subforum, which is specifically for this type of thread, even if they haven't met the minimum post count. Following the rules here (like posting threads in the appropriate subforum is NOT OPTIONAL, and intentionally breaking them doesn't go a long way towards making you look like someone others should have confidence in. Moved to the correct forum.

I see and am glad to now be in the correct spot. I honestly did not know I could post in the section as it seemed to my mind to be lumped under the selfsame section as FS/T, but then again you are completely correct that I could have asked for advice, but it really did not occur to me.

I appreciate the information and will conduct myself in a manner more befitting someone who wants to be taken seriously.

Now I also will not assume that you were being accusatory but were rather educating this new poster, would that be correct? I ask because typed words often leave out much of the non-verbal communication that sounds or body language conveys and as such can be taken incorrectly.

I'd rather know if I am being taken to the woodshed or if I am being given some redirection in a more structured & firm manner.

So now I have the idea of the NOT OPTIONAL perspective and the option of asking for more exact advice before posting in a way that makes me look like and idiot or troll-in-training, which I really do not wish.

Thank you for the perspective and information, I will keep in the forefront of my mind.

If I may... the two best suggestions I can give you.

(1) There are rules for conduct (what and when to post, what not to post, etc.) in every part of this place... or at least, every part I've been in. These rules are pretty comprehensive, and even though they aren't always explained as well as I'd like (I can be quite the curious-bordering-on-nosy fellow with that!), they are pretty clear. If you (a) read the rules and (b) follow them to the best of your ability, you'll be just fine. Minor mishaps are accepted here, to a degree -- perfection is neither found nor required in this place, BUT if you can't (or don't) learn from your mistakes, after a while you'll meet the ban screen. (I've been there myself, briefly.)

(2) If you're not sure about something, PM a mod. Mods are around to keep things rolling in an orderly and smooth manner, and the mods here are very nice and helpful... at least, I've yet to find one that isn't. I've heard stories about mods on other forums being hard to deal with... not here, not even close. They do their job, and they do it well.

Never heard of a private message, aka PM? Check this out. Click on someone's "handle" (the name that they post under) and a little menu comes up. The option that's relevant here is "Send a private message to ______". PM's are great! Nobody but the intended recipients can see them, except in certain very rare and serious circumstances when a mod (or our admin and the creator of [H], Kyle Bennett) absolutely needs to see what's going on in there. That's stuff that is serious enough to potentially involve attorneys, and I've not seen it happen yet. We keep it civil around here.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a windbag... and I think I've said enough here, so I'll go on my way.
 
If you plan on trading once you have met the required post count, go to www.heatware.com and set yourself up an account if you have not done so already.

Make sure you put your hard forum name of RudeRedDog in as an alias if you make your heatware name different.

As far as trolls go, usually if it is too good to be true, it probably is. Make sure you ask for references when buying and be wary of ebay refs. Dont hesitate to ask for a phone number to speak to whomever you are buying from.

Play it smart, use your brain and you should be good to go.
 
I like you already simply because you asked for advice and did so with excellent grammar. =)

I'd definitely recommend creating a heatware account, as the crazy guy above me said.

I know I haven't been here as long as the guys that posted before me, but just use your head and everything will work out fine. Mods are always helpful, PMs are super convenient, and, more often than not, members are willing to help out as well.
 
dont worry about it man. except for the news section and a couple subforums (processors and video cards come to mind) most people on [H] are pretty friendly. plus there are enough people here that unless you repeatedly make the same annoying comments in many different threads, no one will hold it against you later if you make a stupid or uninformed comment here or there. its clear already that youre courteous and thoughtful so post away, you wont have any problems fitting in. and dont worry about oldie either, hes just a Mean Old Mod. :p

EDIT: oh and to answer your questions: main things people hate about noobies are:
1) spamming to get into FS/FT
2) advertising for their business, especially when they pretend to have "found" a deal or something
3) not reading the "READ THIS BEFORE POSTING" posts on various subforums before posting
4) hating or loving apple. you really cant win here, sorry.

Be mindful. Be respectful. If you're going to create an argument, you better have facts to back it up.

Personally, I've never had issues with n00bs here on [H]. [H] will get a new user spamming their way to the min. post count to post in FS/FT--which I do have a problem with.

Also, you will get that occassional user who doesn't bother to read the rules of the forum... Trust me, they are heavily enforced here. If you haven't already, I would suggest you read up on them. :p

If someone tries to flame/troll you then just let it roll off your back. After all no matter what anyone says about you it doesn't matter if it isn't true right?

2> Trolling
If you have a beef with someone and/or their post then take a step back, look at how it upset/annoyed you, remember they could just be a n00b, and then provide a concise response leaving the ego out of it. Trolls feed off of ego. If you remove your ego you provide them with no food to feed up ;)
Now lets say you have a bad experience with a member that has good heat, how should you handle it? You could try PM's. If that doesn't work and you desire to warn others of the individual only provide the facts. Again remove your ego from it. Reread it a few times to see if it needs to be changed/modified before posting and when you can read it as if you were that person without getting angry at yourself then it is probably ready to post. So go have a drink, take a walk, etc and reread it again before posting ;)
 
Proper etiquette for dealing with a trade going bad, very important, don't come off as a douche bag yourself.

Day 1, seller says, HEY, getting you that DC #
Day 3, no DC, PM user
Day 5, still no DC, PM user and warn them that a response would be in their best interest
Day 7, still no DC or response PM, begin process of getting your money back via paypal.
Day 8, nadda, throw up information on Tips/Tricks & Trolls and warn others about user. DO NOT post personal information regarding user, just their handle.

Giving a week is proper, especially while waiting for a response, things DO happen, but if a person is coming online EVERYDAY and never responds, than they may be trolling. At least give the user a chance to defend themselves as well, hence posting here because at this point they can post a response. Try not to be over exaggerating involving these things too, you do not want to come off as a jerk just because you think it can be justified.

As for Draugauth's posts, I agree with everything he said. Although I think its fair to admit, we all have slipped up on ;

Pay for subscription has been out for a month or more now...only way to get GenMay access for the time being is F@H.

I have to ask, because I really do not know......:eek: {cringing waiting for things to explode above my head}

What is F@H exactly.......the @H I kind of figured is supposed to mean something AT [H], correct? What does the F stand for in this particular instance?

I can guess what possible meanings it may have, but none seem readily applicable to the [H] forum.

Please enlighten me so that I can really say I have learned something new today.

Thank you iRaiden. That seems pretty cool actually. I think I will need to become a part of this, as I remember in my Anatomy and Physiology classes, we did talk about things such as this and someone did an Alzheimers presentation and discussed the protein folding issue.

We all discussed it with our Physical Therapist Assistant course instructors. It was really interesting, but was a couple of years back so it had faded, now it's coming to mind.

Glad to see this sort of thing being done. So, since my current rig with slowly failing mobo is a AMD Sempron 1800MHz with 2048MB of RAM, I am assuming I can help out.

What do you think?

Yes you can fold on that Sempron but it will be very little PPD. Not sure on the PPD it will produce, probably less than 1k PPD. (PPD = Points per day which is basically a measurement of how much processing power the CPU is capable of)

Every little bit helps though. Drop on down into the Distributed Computing sub forum and we'll get you setup.

Even those of us who have been here for a while can still do dumb things. The best way to make best of [H] & the restricted subforums is to keep a cool head. Some of us can be trolls at times but from what I understand is that most of us can be a good bunch. I know that I've had my fair share of brilliance & asshattery. You're going in the right direction & that helps a lot. Best of luck to you here. May the mods ever be in your favor. ;)
