ok, here is the dilemma

i have a 1680x1050 westy 22...

i'm finding out that there isn't a whole lot of games that support that resolution natively... but no problem...

also what i'm finding out is that most games that do, just stretch the picture anyway...

but take for example rainbow six vegas...

ok it supports 1280x1024 (just about any modern game supports this res)
so what i'd like to do is play the game @ 1280x1024 native without stretching... with like 200 pixel black boxes on the left and right side, and i guess 12pixel black boxes on the top and bottom

i have an ati x1900xt and i can't seem to find the setting to allow me to run the monitor like this

could anybody shed some light on how to do this?

i also play old games like starcraft that only support 640x480, and i know to play that at native res it would be like, 4 inches tall and 3 inches wide, so i can see stretching that, but not to full widescreen... letterboxes on the left and right would be nice

in catalyst you have an option to do this. cannot remember were exactly, just look for the words "aspect ratio" or "1:1"... or anything that sound like it :p

thanks... i've pretty much scoured all of the catalyst settings and have found some stuff that looks like it should be the thing i'm looking for, but it still doesn't work...

i'll look again as soon as i reinstall xp (i'm done with vista on my gaming rig, needs another year or so to mature)

Op - not sure what you mean by screens displaying native res AND stretching it anyway.

One thing that comes to mind... 1280x1024 is not a square resolution. It's possible that some games you're playing in 1280 are actually squished in aspect ratio, and the 1680x1050 is actually displaying them properly.

counter-strike source.... supports 1680x1050 natively... but it stretches the picture horizontally at about 15-25% and like... 75-85%.... (the screen/video card doesn't stretch, its outputting an actual 1680x1050 pixels, but the game engine does)

you don't actually see more... (in the case of counter-strike source, that wouldn't even be fair)

maybe 1280x1024 is a bad example.... say 1280x960.... totally doesn't matter

ok, i'm in the catalyst control center, and i see under Digital Panel Properties that there is a subheading "Image Scaling"

i choose: "Use centered timings" instead of "Scale image to full panel size" and it makes absolutely no difference (testing with NFS:Carbon)

If you have scaling options in your screens OSD/OSM (on screen display/on screen menu), then make sure its set to 1:1 (or scale to aspect if you have that and want things bigger without stretch). Some screens override the GFX output and stretches anyway though. :(

For Rainbow six vegas, I recommend this solution!

yea, i've also scoured my OSD so far (discovered i have PIP, sweeeet, only works with certain video inputs though.... DVI on main and VGA in PIP would K some A)

i think i'm in trouble..... but your link to rainbow six looks awesome, its not stretching!
thanks man...

just take a lot of balls for this card to push that many pixels... i guess i'll have to turn the settings down and jack the res

according to this thread counter strike source does not stretch the image. looks pretty clear on the first two pictures anyway. says it has been tested at 1680x1050 too.
