Questions about lapping

It's been a while since I've built a new box. Are you guys still lapping the heat spreader on their cpu's before you mount your cooling, or has Intel gotten better at making them flat?

I just picked up an 8400 at Fry's. Should I dig out the old, thick mirror again and a bunch of grits? Any 8400 owners out there? What did you do?

Is there a better method to find out other than scribbling on the heat spreader with a Sharpie and doing a quick sanding? Is there a better way to lap other than figure eights by hand?

For cooling I will either be water cooling with a D-Tek Fuzion, or maybe trying one of the new Noctua NH-U12P air coolers.

Thanks for any info.

Intel is still piss poor at making them flat.

If you use a Dtek Fuzion then I do believe it works better with a convex IHS.
