Questions about DVD media..

May be kind of a stupid question, but how do I even start to choose DVD media?

I'm planning on getting a Lite-On 812S (black, retail.. or would that be a bad decision also?), and I'm not sure where to get some 8x media.

How do I choose? Could I just go out and get the cheapo 4x brands for about a dollar each?
