I'm considering buying the Steam 6 game gift pack here, but have a few questions first.

Can anyone give me any personal insight on this? From my understanding it is 4 player co-op, but that's about all I know. Do you host the server yourself or does the publisher? Is there enough content for co-op? Other than having more players (obviously) is anything different than the single player version? Are there "private" servers so you only play with the people you want or is there some matchmaking crap you must use? Does it matter if two characters are at vastly different levels - in other words will it still let you group? Does the gear you get while grouped stay with you on single player as well? And lastly, and most importantly, is it any fun?

The multiplayer is peer-to-peer if I recall, but with only four players, it doesn't hurt. You can chose to host a multiplayer game then invite friends. I think you can also search for other open games to join, but I not done this. You have the choice to make your multiplayer game private so only people you invite are allowed in.

Most of the quests are all a variant on several basic ideas: go to location 'X' kill boss 'Y', go to location 'X' collect item 'Y', etc.. The quests themselves get pretty repetitive, but they provide a reason for you to go to places, and therefore serve their purpose. The level of the character hosting the game sets how the quest advances. So if you are vastly different in level, you won't be able to advance the main game quests. You can still shoot things, which is the main point anyways. I believe you can use the same characters for single player and multiplayer, but the gear you get while playing with others is supposedly better.

As for if it is fun: like I said, the quests are pretty repetitive, but playing with friends and killing stuff is fun for me. If you have friends to play the game with, it will probably be good, but playing single player would probably get boring.

I just picked it up and I was having a wicked hard time after just a little bit. 4 player coop. I'd dump like a hundred bullets in a skag and they'd have like half health. I guess I have to shoot them in the mouth, but just generally speaking I suck. Same thing with dude that chases me and just clubs me and I'm almost dead. Fucker can take so much. I got to get to leveling up or something. It was pretty frustrating.

You can invite friends to your single player game too and it becomes multiplayer.

Difficulty scales with player count. More players = harder
