Currently I have 3 Maxtor Drives, 80GB, a 200GB, and a 250GB(16MB).

The 250GB I got back in like May or June, and I think its dying :( When I boot up it shows up as ATA33!! which could explain the slow ass transfer rates; but this could be because it is connected to the same IDE cable as my CDRW.

What I was wondering is would it be wise to purchase a PCI IDE card and put all my HDDs on it instead of using the MB headers? Thus to seperate my CDRW from the HDDs. The next addition to the system will be SATA as I do see PATA going away sooner or later, but right now there just are not any hot deals (missed the $150 300GB SATA last week).

So should I get a PCI controller card and use that, as I am sure I will pick up some PATA drives as they go on sale here in the future as they are phased out. What brand should I look at for the controller?

The cdrw is most likely causing the slowdown, ide will only run at the speed of the slowest device on the cable. Which is typically cd/dvd type drives. You could probably pick up a decent ata 133 controller for less than $75 dollars from newegg, monarch or comptuergeeks.com. Nothing wrong with putting the drives on a pci controller at all. Might be easier for you to leave one on the mobo header to boot from though. Sometimes it can be a pain to boot from some pci cards, not all but some.

Good point, I never even thought about the boot up requirements.

I found a few controllers on the Egg for under $20 :) But don't know if there are very 'good' lol.

Suggestion. Search more, do not decide too fast. There are lots of place to search on internet. I know egg is good, but not always cheapest.
