QUESTION!!!

all i wanna know is it worth upgrading from a 800mhz to a 1.2ghz and im not an overclocker so is it worth the 43 dollars
 
can't you just overclock the old one ? Are you sure your mobo can handle that 1.2 ?
What are you using that computer for ? If it's for dailly usage then you will enjoy a slightly faster response, and if you make it as a home server, I would just keep it like that.

check at pricewatch, there are some cheaper Pentium III
 
yes my mobo can handle the 1.2 but i dont want to or even like to overclock because i just want to leave it the way it is....they are made to be at that speed and im just not a fan of it because it mainly shortens the life span.....but anyway is it still worth it will i be able to see the difference in the speed of a 1.2ghz compared to my 800mhz?

If this computer is for home use, and I believe that is what you intend to use it for, then I would have to advise against wasting $43 on a 5 year old processor. A decent mobo, cpu, and ram can be had for less than $175, and it would operate at least 6x the speed of that 1,2Ghz p3.

Edit: I just realized that 1.2Ghz p3's top speed is matched by even a mildy OCed (+33.33mhz) conroe/allendale's FSB speed. :eek:
 
the tualatin 1.3 is way better than a 800mhz. it runs cooler and can be overclocked to 1500 easily. at that speed it is about the same as a p4 @ 1.8 ghz

Tusl2 should be able to run it no problemo.

if you don't want to over clock it it will run very cool. Its a very old PC for sure, but if it makes life a bit easier until you can upgrade i would say it is worth it.
 
I just built up a new Intel E6300 system which started life at 1866 MHz.

It was simple to overclock it to 3300 MHz where it was Prime and benchmark stable.

Compared to an overclocked P4 at 1870 MHz, this new bottom of the line Allendale E6300 is 5X faster at SuperPi and about 8X faster than a P3-800 and that's just a single core benchmark. For any programs like music/video encoding that can take advantage of that second core, you will see another 80% boost in performance. New computers are WAY faster than the old stuff.

Last fall I upgraded my old P3-866 laptop with a P3-1200 CPU. My laptop is fine for internet / e-mail use but the boost in performance was barely noticeable after a day or two. I also upgraded the display from 14.1 to 15 inch and bought a bigger, faster hard drive and a faster video card with twice as much memory and now I have a top of the line ( for 2001 ) laptop.

Looking back I should have saved all that money and I could have sold my old laptop and for a couple of hundred bucks more I could have got a nice shiny new Dell Core2Duo laptop with a full warranty. Lesson learned.

Don't spend money on old junk! :rolleyes:

He does have a point though. I don't think it is worth that much. If you could get the chip for like 20 some bucks sure. For anything more I think the money is better spent towards a bigger upgrade. Hell I think newegg had a special the other day for 70 bucks for a athlon 64 3000 and motherboard. Figure another 100 bucks total for ram, ps, and heatsink and you have a hell of a little upgrade.

It sucks because I use to have like a 933, 1.2 and 1.4 in my box. Think I gave them away like a year ago. If I still had them I would have given you one. O well.

well the reason is my dad has this board and computer etc but it can only have 512mb memory max, which i have in it already but i want to get him a processor for christmas but i would get him a new mobo cpu and ram but he is so picky and if something goes wrong its my fault because i got something he wouldnt of got, and plus my mobo, cpu and psu went a few weeks ago and im using my money on that. if you want to see, here are my components:
(going from a 800mhz which i see everyday this will be lightning fast to me)

Ultra 512mb ram ($45)

Ive done my research and it seems to be at least $40 cheaper than at newegg or tigerdirect
