whats faster/better performance:

1gb single channel @ pc3200

or

2gb single channel @ pc2700

depends on the programs... most newer games will probably like 2gb over 1gb of faster ram

ya im talking in terms of games, dont do much memory intersive programs. i figured it would be better to have more but a little slower, wanted to be sure though

Depends on the game as well, some dont need more than 1 GB.
Those games will run slower because 2GB runs at DDR333 for you.

Theres no clear answer to this unless you overclock the 2GB as far as it will go, then the slight loss in performance for some games isnt so bad and you get the benefit of 2GB for games that need them.

one thing to keep in mind though, is that if you go from ddr400 to ddr333 with the same size.. the performance difference is like 1-2% in most cases ;)

I decided to find out what you can typically expect running 3DM03, 3DM05 and Fear.
For the tests my CPU was set back to default speed (1.8GHz), memory set to DDR333 then DDR400.
No other settings were changed.

DDR333
3DM03: 13987
3DM05: 6882
Fear
min: 28
Av: 66
max: 175

DDR400
3DM03: 14263
3DM05: 7330
Fear
min: 31
Av: 69
max: 187

% difference going from DDR333 to DDR400
3DM03: 1.9%
3DM05: 6.5%
Fear
min: 10.7%
Av: 4.5%
max: 6.8%

This is a pretty small subset of all the games but I wanted an idea of what to expect :)

just for kicks, try running everything twice in a row. the discrephancy in the '05 score is odd, considering that i can go from 311mhz to 560mhz (ddr2) without affecting the final score more than 20 pts or so

Thats way too much testing so I did it for Fear only.
PC clocked to 1.8GHz, default gfx clock (it was before too), memory clocked to DDR333 then DDR400

DDR333, First Run
min: 28
Av: 65
max: 167

Second Run
min: 28
Av: 65
max: 169

DDR400, First Run
min: 32
Av: 70
max: 180

Second run
min: 31
Av: 68
max: 171

% differences in Fear benchmark between DDR333 and DDR400
comparing First Run DDR333 to First Run DDR400
min: 14.2%
Av: 4.6%
max: 7.2%

comparing Second run DDR333 to Second Run DDR400
min: 10.7%
Av: 4.6%
max: 6.5%

i ended up overclocking it all to 460mhz and tightening the timing to 2.5-3-3-5. runs great, itll deff hold me till i can get the 2gb OCZ
