My setup is as follows, I have raid 0 with 2 160 gig drives with win xp installed. Previous to this I had two other drives, now on ide 1 slave and master, both with win xp on them.
When I boot up my system if I have either of the two other non raid drives hooked up it boots off them, only if I have them physically disconected does my raid boot.
Ive tried going into bios and changed the first, second, third and forth boot device to disabled but it doesnt seem to work. How can I boot off the raid and keep the other drives connected but not boot off them?
Lastly, wanted to know, if there is any performance difference by having the raid drives on different ide cables, right now I have primary master and secondary master, any performance difference with primary master and pri slave (both on the same ide cable) and leaving the second raid ide empty?

Thanks.

Most motherboards will default to look on IDE 1 & 2 first. If it sees a boot drive it will. I have never gotten a Raid setup to boot when I had a HDD on IDE 1 or 2 with a bootable OS on it.

You should have your Raid HDD's on different channells. IDE can only access one HDD at a time on a channell. In Raid 0 it needs to access both of those drives at the same time. Leave them the way you have it configured.

Most recent BIOSes lets you set which HD it should try first.
(However, Windows might keel over and die because things aren't where it expects. Be prepared for a reinstall.)

OK, I figured it out, if I set my first boot device to SCSI it boots off the raid 0. DOnt know why this is but it works so thats cool. My second question was also answers, thank you.
One more question though, I want to try to move the contents off one of my old drives to the new raid. I left maxblast utility on overnight and when I woke up the raid0 wont boot so it didnt go over very well. Anyone have any additionall utilities to try, I'de like to make an exact copy, OS and all so it boots. I'm about to try ghost so Ill let you know how that goes.

Installing on a Raid setup will be hard if not impossible. Your current OS drive is IDE based. It does not have the Raid drivers in it to boot from. You would be better off doing a fresh install.

The only thing I could suggest is try to do a repair of the OS from the XP cd after you get it moved. Boot up from CD install the Raid drivers by hitting F6 at the prompt. The when it sees the old install you copyed over it will ask if you want to repair.

"Successfully imaging a RAID drive is dependent on the specific computer model, driver controller, hard drive, and RAID implementation. Symantec provides the following information only as an aid to cloning RAID drives. This information is a suggestion only. It is likely to work only in limited circumstances."

the same can be said of any reasonably priced alternatives
