Re: Memory
I've got bad news and I'd like to hear what you think.

Upon having an employee test the Hynix memory, two of seven sticks failed mem-test in the first 5 minutes, but thats not the worst of it. When he tried to test the Samsung there was a bad electric smell and the machine shut down. It wouldn't start back up so I told him to test the PSU. That worked fine so I checked the system myself and found the Samsung memory was pc2-3200 and the misalignment shorted the motherboard. I was amazed the memory fit the board until I notice the RAM slots were slightly elongated. That .5mm was just enough.

So in short, I've got five working sticks of ddr266, six sticks of ddr2-400 and at least a fried mobo.

What are your thoughts,

****

So, i'm confused. It almost looks like in the message that he wants me to cover a motherboard too, but I cant say thats what he wants because he hasn't clarified.

I can cover the bad sticks of memory, and just refund him for those sticks, which is fine. But i'm confused.

What do you guys think?

what is there to talk about. refund him the money for the bad sticks if you believe him that they are bad.

him putting ddr2 memory into a ddr mobo has nothing to do with you. the bad memory didn't burn out his mobo, him putting wrong memory in there did.

I think you should receive a refund on the two sticks that failed. The motherboard incident is on you/your employee. I don't believe it's the seller's fault, unless he was trying to pass it off as something it wasn't.

Well, a little confusing, so let me see if I have this straight.........

You stated the Samsung was PC2-3200 (DDR2) when you sold it to him. Then he put it into a DDR1 motherboard? If that is the case, then the motherboard is not your fault.

I would refund for any bad sticks but I do not see how you would be responsible for him or his employee putting incompatible hardware in his motherboard.

**On a side note, my brother did that once to my other brother's system (that I had built), thinking he was upgrading the memory. I took a quick look at it and saw he was trying to use DDR2. Swapped back in the DDR1 and it booted right up. Probalby lucky they didn't fry the board.

This is resolved. I am refunding for the 2 dead sticks and the DDR2 sticks, which is fine with me, I dont mind. 50%.

I dont mind the loss of money or anything as much as I mind getting bad heat, so if I have to take a hit on money to keep a good rep, I would rather that!

I would hope you still end up getting good feedback. You clearly stated what you were selling in the first PM, and it wasn't your fault he didn't read clearly enough :)

there is no reason to fear bad rep, cuz you ddin't do anything wrong. unless you knew sticks were bad in first place. otherwise you're in the right on this all the way.
