Question regarding SSDs

I have done a quick search regarding my question but I haven't found anything. I just purchased a Kingston M Series 160GB (SNM225-S2/160GB) and currently use a WD 500GB hard drive for my OS and programs. Is it possible to take an image of the WD drive and transfer that to the new Kingston SSD, or is a clean installation the only way to go? I went with the Kingston drive because it's just a rebradged Intel X25-M, and I got it for a cool £220.

only if your WD is no more than 140gb full, otherwise you can't mirror it to a 160gb drive, and even then you need pretty contemporary program to do it correctly, and with a correct partition alignment.

Thanks to the wonder that is DRM, Windows won't even work on a new hard drive without reinstall/activation. And if you're going to reinstall Windows, you may as well just start from scratch, and copy whatever files you think you need.

I used xxcopy on a machine to transfer Win XP from a normal drive to an SSD and it worked just fine.

Not always, if it's an OEM or corporate Windows, copying it won't need a reactivation. It definitely does NOT require a reinstall.
