I've got an older Athlon Thunderbird 1GHz machine with a Abit KT7A motherboard that I use for my server/router. I've noticed the system runs pretty hot which seems to be normal for older Athlons, however, with the summer months coming, it's going to get hotter and I was wondering if someone can recommend a better cooler/heatsink than the current generic one I have on there right now.

Originally, I was going to upgrade the system to an Athlon XP chip because I know they supposely run cooler, but sadly, this board does not support the anything over an Athlon 1.4GHz, (no support for XP chips) However, if I were to upgrade the processor, do the Thunderbird 1.33GHz or 1.4GHz chips run any cooler than my current Thunderbird? Am I just better off getting a better cooler?

Thanks

I still have my old Athlon T-Bird 1.2 running in the other room. It doesn't have the best video card but when someone plays a game it will get up to 70 degrees Celcius. This is with an Athlon XP 2100 stock heatsink with a 80MM to 60MM converter and an fairly mild 80MM fan.

Yea the original TBs ran hot. Everyone used to make fun of them :D The 1.4 i dont think will run cooler at all. I would just pick up a new HSF from a local store or an online vendor. I probably wouldnt reccomend at this point anything more than a 5-10 dollar heatsink, since, given the value of the processor anything better is going to cost almost as much.
