Nvidia has shadowplay
amd has game dvr
Both seem to allow pretty low performance hits while enabled which is great for recording. According to what I have read, both amd and nvidia are using an h.264 encoder.
My question is whether this is some sort of specialized hardware encoder built into the gpus like an asic designed for very specific jobs like on the fly encoding, or is it a more generalized used of the gpu hardware to encode on the fly?
If it's the former, then support for hvec encoding solutions like h.265 encoding or some open source alternative might need to wait for newer gpus with specialized asics built into the gpus for that specific tasks. If it's the latter, then presumably both amd/nvidia could just update the software for their entire gpu lines that support hardware encoding to support the new codecs.
