Debating purchasing a cheap Asus EEEPC for my kids... when I say cheap, I mean a 2gb ssd drive, 512mb ram, 900mhz celeron, 7" screen. I would like to have more storage so I was originally thinking of getting a small external drive for storage. The more I thought, the more I started thinking, 'why wouldn't a large thumbdrive work for storage?'

Would this work?

Remember, I only want this so the kids can research/browse online and use for digital picture storage.

Any advise would be appreciated

Flash drive speeds won't be very nice if you are transfering a bunch of small files like pictures. You could certainly do it, but it will be slow.

All the Eee PC models I have seen (I own a 900) have an SD card reader. It works reasonably fast.

I was offered a pretty good deal for (2) 5400rpm 40gb drives that I can purchase a cheap external enclosure for. I think this route will be best, then I can simply get them a thumbdrive, or one of the SDHC cards to use for additional storage.
