RE: Asus Xonar D2X

Does the volume control in the Windows audio mixer control the output level on TOSLink digital output? Or does it adjust analogue only?

Or is it fixed?

software volume setting controls everything, the digital out should be a 1:1 mirror of the analog outputs up to 5.1; passthrough may be different depending on what software you've got running (note: may)

generally if you're using TOS output, you're hooked into a receiver/decoder that has some form of preamp, if this is the case, I'd suggest running the Xonar's volume at 100% and adjusting your actual listening volume from said receiver/decoder device

Volume is controlled by the amp on the soundcard not the signal type.

for a number of devices the digital output is usually fixed and there can be variable or fixed analog alongside that (This is true of many CD, LD, DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray players, as well as a number of TVs and projectors)

and the TOS output isn't in any way connected to the "amp on the soundcard"
