Question: Quad Core/Multicore uses

With machines soon to have Quad cores or more, and multiple video cards/monitors, is it possible to use a single machine to run two versions of a game that output to separate video cards, monitor, keyboard, and mouse?

This way you could have have a friend over to game and not require a separate machine, only a second monitor and keyboard and mouse. I am sure there has to be a way to split the resources and configure the controls.

I imagine a single machine in the future could serve multiple local clients through multiple video cards and keyboard/mouse. This would really make sense for internet cafes and LAN gaming. Computer labs could save a ton too. You buy one machine and it serves 4 or more clients. This could save a lot of electricity and hardware costs too, in theory.

1. Any ideas if this is possible or might be in the future?

2. Could a person use VMware or other virtual machine software to do this currently?

Im guessing you would need a lot of ram to go with that as well. Like 8GB.
 
It will always be cheaper, easier, more reliable, and faster to just have 2 separate half decent machines.
 
Right now, there are many problems for dual-/multi-core systems to run just one single game properly. (Yes, there are solutions for dual-core rigs, but some of them involve either hiding or "disabling" one of the cores.) But a lot of what you talk about (running one game off of one computer to multiple "players") seems too complicated at this moment. It should be possible, but even gaming consoles (which are considered much simpler machines than computers) have difficulty at that task.

Theoretically, gaming consoles already have the ability to allow multiple players to use multiple input devices (in the form of the gaming controllers) with one system. The problem, however, comes with the display. Often, all of the players are either on the "same" screen (like in most sport games) or in split-screen mode (often seen in racing games and first-person shooters) using the same display. On the computer, I've haven't really played many multiplayer games that weren't either turn-based (like games based off of board games) or online (which eliminates the "multiple players on one system" argument altogether).

To the OP: How soon in the future do you think this would happen? I personally don't see this happening anytime within the next 20-25 years.
