Question on switching to raid 0

I was just wondering. If I buy a 4tb black hard drive now, and use it until the 4tb starts to fill up, if I add another 4tb and go to raid 0 is there a way to transfer (or maintain) that data to the raid 0 array without using another 4tb drive as a backup?
 
Install the current 4tb black while in raid mode (in bios) - you can use it even with just one drive. Then just add another and go back into raid settings when you get the 2nd one. Keep in mind this only works one direction. From 1 to 2 drives (or more) but if you change your mind, you can't undo it and go backwards - 2 to 1 drive.
 
Thanks, that is exactly what I was hoping for. Back when I used raid a lot more than I do now, I seem to have remembered doing this. The only way I would swap back is a drive failure, but in that case my data is more or less gone anyway. Thanks again.
 
You can't go to raid0 from a single disk (and keep your data) without copying your data to a 3rd drive. In either case I recommend against raid 0.

What would you recommend then? These would be my drives for bulk game storage. Figured Raid 0 would give me a little performance boost. Since there will be no critical data on the drives I did not figure it would be a big deal if one of the drives did go.
 
So you believe the benefits of raid is not worth the hassle in a desktop application?
 
Get a small SSD for OS and frequently used programs. 512 gb SSDs cost the same as many 4 tb drives nowadays.
 
Already have an SSD for boot and the games I play the most, I was just looking to upgrade my 1tb bulk storage drive and potentially raid it in the future.

Thanks for the responses, I will probably just grab a 4tb now and if it isn't enough in the future grab another and run it as a separate drive.
 
It's not worth it to do RAID-0 on a bulk storage drive, as others said.
