I have a Sony Vaio FS 640.

I hate the intel card. It has issues. Are all wireless cards the same? meaning can I get an Arthos card?

Or can I only use specific cards?

Please help.

thanks

No, not all wireless cards are the same. I've been happy with the Atheros card I have in one of my laptops. It tends to work better and be more reliable than the integrated Intel cards.

If you have a PC Card slot or USB2, you can get a wireless card that you can use instead of the built-in card.

I appreciate the help.

SO how do I go about determining what will work in mine vs the crappy intel one?

Sony's website is not too good for that kind of thing..

We've had a hard time at work Atheros WLAN adapters and lack of support for WPA2. To be honest, the Intel Pro Wireless and Broadcom WLAN adapters are pretty reliable.

My Compaq had a mini-pci Broadcom 54mb (part number BCM94318MPG) and it had pretty lousy reception. If I was right next to the wifi router than it was OK, but as I got farther away it went downhill fast. So I got a Hawking HWC54D PCMCIA card. It has a swivel directional antenea and once you point it in the right direction the reception has been like 100% increase. With the antennea folded down its about as good as the Broadcom was all the time. I opened my laptop and the broadcom antenna runs along the bottom of the laptop so its not on an optimal plane for picking up signals.

With my router upstairs I use to have a couple spots downstairs where I would get no signal, now I pretty much have 80%-90% everywhere. It was so bad before that I had a long CAT5 cable that I used in the living room with the laptop for a hard connection. For about a week after I got the Hawking card my wife kept pluggin in the CAT5 cable, and I told her that it has been unplugged this whole time because I was using the port for the Xbox, and she said she didn't even notice it wasn't a hard connection because it never dropped out or hung up.

To be honest I was a little leary though at first because I bought some Hawking Antenna's for my wi-fi router and they didn't do a damn thing. This PCMCIA card was only like $60 at Microcenter and its worked like a charm.
