my search turned up nothing so here my question...

I am about to buy an Acer 24" and am wondering how 24" LCDs do with non natve res. this might be one of those things with no answers because it all depends on the panel, but I am wanting to run Crysis at 1280x720 so I can still run it at very high (dx9 XP hacked very high) with 2xaa and get 30fps (ignore my specs in sig I am currently in the process of upgrades this week). Or will it make it look funny and out of proportion?

I currently am running it at 1280x1024 on high (dx9) with 2xaa and it is VERY playable and when I ran GPU bench last night after the 1.1 patch got 43fps average. So I am hoping at an actual smaller res (720 vs 1024) that I will be able to turn on dx9 very high (is that hack still working? Haven't played with it post patch) and still get playable frames of 30+

I know next to nothing about LCDs....sorry if this is a stupid question. I plan on running everything else at 1920x1200 :D including 360 and DirecTV on the new Acer

This varies by the vendor and model. My Dell does a real good job IMO. Hopefully someone with the Acer can tell you more.

Sorry to shit on your parade, but a 3870 will not be able to play Crysis at 1920x1200. And unless you have that mysterious VA priced like TN Acer, Crysis will look like utter shit. The consensus is Acer makes some of the worst monitors. LCD is one area of your PC where cheaper=worst, always. This is no Celeron 300A to 450mhz. Plan on spending $500+.

He's not asking about running Crysis at 1920x1200. He's asking how the IQ is when running a 24" at NON-NATIVE resolutions. I do agree with your point about VA panels being better than TN, but different people have different needs.

Koretex:
I just loaded up Bioshock - changed the resolution to 1280x720 to maintain the widescreen AR. It looks alright, playing at this resolution makes things look fuzzy, like I was playing on a TV. If you have no choice and you can put up with it, it should be okay. I haven't tried any lower, I think this is the minimum you can go.

Your best bet is to pick one up from a Big Box store and try it out. See if the end result is suitable for you.

EDIT: Oops, forgot to mention that I was using a LG L246WP-BN - MVA panel - not TN.

I have a Gateway 22 inch TN panel. Some non-native resolutions look great, some not so much.

1280x768 or 1280x800 look like ass....untill I started playing around with the custom resolution settings in the nVidia control panel. Changing the Back-end parameters to GTF made a huge difference at those resolutions, as well as 1024x768. 1280x768/800 are now almost as clean as native, 1024x768 is bearable.

I know you have an ATI card, but maybe ATI has options to play with too.

I actually got rid of the 3870 as I was VERY disapointed in it. It ran worse then my 8800gts 320mb in everything I threw at it...I bought it to crossfire but decided against it because of so many problems with dual card setups. I now have a new eVGA 8800gts 512mb card that is freaking unbelievable! I've only had it since Wednesday so haven't had time to play with it much but already running stable at 700/1000 after hours of crysis/ut3/cod4 gaming so I plan on playing with that more this weekend. I also just installed last night my new Q6600 w/ ultra120 extreme and the scythe whatever (the most cfm one can't remember) I ran it up to a 350mhz fsb and ran prime95 for an hour and it was still rocking away when I cancelled prime with core temps of 160F...which is actually higher than I thought it would be with this gigantic heatsink!

As far as the guy who said Acer panels are junk I totally disagree! I have had 3 seperate Acer laptops 2 of which are me and my wives current laptops....2 19" panels, 1 17", 1 15", 1 22", and have 2 friends with 24" panels and have nothing but love for them, gaming included especially my friends 24" panels which are incredible to game on! Which is why I want one....for $400 IMO they can't be touched.

I agree. Acer makes decently priced, and decent LCD's. Whether or not a display looks good at non native res means nothing as far as quality. All LCD's will look worse at anything less than native! I have used several Acer displays for my customers, son, and myself over the years, never had one die. In fact I still have an TN panel Acer AL1916W right now that has been going strong for 3 years....in fact, it has less banding and no inverse ghosting than my "premium" Gateway FPD2485W did.....!!! Figure that one out...

Maybe update your sig.

Wouldn't a better scaling chip make a difference? Like, if I resize an image in MSPaint in odd ratios, it generally looks like total ass. If I resize is Photoshop, most of the detail is kept, although sharpness is lost. Yeah, sub-native will always look worse, but don't some brands have better scalers?

That would probably mean increased input delay. If you play games such as Crysis you probably don't like input delay.

If the display even HAS a true hardware scaler....the Gateway FPD2485W had one, and it generally wasn't considered all that good.

Can't you buy an external scaler?

A good one (if they exist) could increase image quality and decrease input lag.

Ive never heard of that before for computers. NEC monitors that ive seen / owned scale well, Gateway tends to not. Acer is just a bad brand imho.
