question on memory stick adapters

I have an HP G42-415DX notebook with a card slot that supports Memory Stick, MS Pro, MMC, SD, and XD cards. I have a camera that uses a MS Pro Duo card. The card came with an adapter to make it fit a non-Duo slot. The notebook's manual, however, says that I should never insert any type of adapter into the slot "to avoid damaging the digital card or the computer." What's that about? What exactly is the problem supposed to be, and has anyone successfully used a Duo adapter with a non-Duo slot? I mean, the adapter is obviously useful somewhere, or it wouldn't exist. (The slot in my other computer is Duo-compatible, so I've never had to use the adapter anywhere.)
