Question on Intel/Nvidia

I am in the market to buy some new hardware. I want to buy the best intel mobo and proc. and also the best nvidia graphics card.

My question is, does anyone know of some lingering rumors that something new may be coming out soon? IE, not a P4 or FX 5900? Not sure if I asked that correctly but you should get the general idea.

Thanks for the insight!

Best P4 mobos right now would probably be Abit's IC7 series (IC7, IC7-G, and IC7-MAX3) and Asus' P4-800 series (P4P800 & P4C800)

...Also, all of the nVidia fanboys out there should be jumping for joy right about now because nVidia is launching the NV40 series on the 13th. They're having some LAN Party up in SF to celebrate its launch.

Of course, the current king of the high end gaming graphics arena, ATi, should be launching its R420 series of VPUs sometime soon as well.

Personally, I'm waiting to see how badly nVidia fucks up this series of GPUs (or how well they do, for that matter) and what improvements ATi makes over its current lineup. :D

At this point if you want the best nVidia has to offer, you might as well wait for the new GPUs to see if they actually have anything good worth buying. Right now it's ATI's game, but with the new chips coming.... GOK.

Since you're right on the edge I'd wait and see a few weeks to know what's going to happen.

You also have Prescotts with new sockets coming, so unless you want to build a Northwood system now (current prescotts are the suck), you'd have to wait even longer. I think a Northwood system, like a 3.0c is a good deal though. They've dropped in price a lot.

Ya, I am basically interested in if intel will be coming out with anything new soon. I want to purchase whatever is the latest as it is time to upgrade and I am looking to not go cheap this time.

I will probably go with the new nvidia series as I have never been a fan of ATi. Have had too many issues with their cards and drivers and have never once had a problem with a card from Nvidia. But, as always, it is all opinion.

So I guess I will wait a couple weeks before I buy anything and see how it goes. If anyone has anymore information on the new things from intel, let me know. Thanks.

If you want to go all out, why not wait for PCI Express and DDR II on the new mobo's coming out about Q3-4 later in the year. Then you can get a PCI Express video card and Presscot CPU with DDR II. You just need to sell your house and car to afford it, though:D

By the way, just to influence your Nvidia buying decision, check the GPU comparison tables at Rojak's Pot listed at [H]ardOCP articles today.

I used to love Nvidia, but you can't deny that ATI is really kicking ass now. My next card will be ATI.

And if ATI goes back to being teh suck and NVidia is on top again? :p

Anyway, if you have the money to blow, wait a bit for the 64 bit stuff to actually get PCI E. 64 bit CPU + PCI E + PCI E vid card goodness + good RAM = very nice system. Just don't forget XP 64 bit edition, when it is all worked out and drivers are available.

Otherwise, I'd say you would be fine with a 3.0c.

It will be a couple of years before we need processors faster then whats out right now for excellent performance. I would say go with a 3.0c Northwood and a nVidia 5900XT. Intel's new lineup will take several months to iron out but should be on track by the end of the year and the start of next. PCI Express wont be anything spectacular for a while, especially not for video cards. Its mainly going to help releave the stress on the PCI cards in which most of us dont really have a problem. PCI Express is more of a future thing as is 64-bit processing. Both are great but not needed right now and wont be for a couple of years or more probably.

The 3.0c Northwood will give you flawless performance and the 5900XT is a hella overclocker. For under $200 you can have a video card that overclocks to a 5950. And by saving the cash from going with one of them instead of a 5950 or 9800XT you'll have more to put towards one of the new lineup cards that will spank the 5950 and 9800XT both.

There are alot of other good motherboards out besides just the Abit and Asus boards. It seems like everyone gets stuck on them because thats what several use and everyone starts recommending them. I have the Gigabyte 8KNXP and it has more features and is higher rated then both of them. Gigabyte and MSI are both great boards. The Abit board is the best for overclocking and Asus boards are ok but i'm not real partial to them. I'm a big Gigabyte fan especially after just building a new system with the 8KNXP.

Well ATI may not completely suck but theres nothing stopping nVidia from taking the lead and holding it. You have to remember how far nVidia was ahead of ATI until just recently. Nvidia ruled the video card world for quite some time. And most likely they will again.

A half-dozen of my friends are going to the GeForce LAN, so hopefully at least one of them will come back with the new cards... benchies anyone?

I don't give them, or any company, that much credit.

The computer world is fickle and fast paced, and it's just as easy for nVidia to take the lead after 2 years of being 2nd best as it is for them to fail miserably and all but disappear from the market.

And ATI could continue to lead, could take 2nd seat, or could crumble.

The horse is dead, quit beating it. If you have a suggestion and supportive evidence of superiority, then make it, but these fanboi threads are really irritating...it's like arguing religion...everyone is right. Bury the horse and move on ;)
