question on hard hard drives...

hey im new when it comes to computers but am really interested in buying and building my own setup. I have learned a ton in the past few weeks of research and have picked out most of my system.

Mobo: ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
GPU: eVGA Geforce 7900GT x 2
PSU: PC Power & Cooling 510
RAM:CORSAIR XMS 2GB

But when it comes to hard drives, Im totally clueless. My friend is good at computers and he told me to get the WD raptor 150 GB and then another 7200 rpm hd for space. Is this good? I have heard a lot about RAID(not really a clue what that means, I think it has something to do with many hd's acting as one big one) and SATA and all that jazz. Could someone point me in the right direction of what to do? thanks a buttload in advance
 
His advice is good. And the rest of the machine looks good, too; that's gonna be a nice build. Don't cheap out on a case, though. World of difference between a $40 case and a $100 case.

 
I'm partial to Lian-Li (and the Coolermaster Stacker for really big). And look for a case with removable motherboard tray.

You only need one Raptor. Plug it in, slipstream your Windows CD or load drivers from floppy, and install as normal. It's as easy as it gets.

Having one very fast drive as the boots and apps drive and one seperate mass storage drive as a back up for your documents, pictures, music, downloads is more efficient though. If anything were to happen to his Raptor, it would suck if he had anything important in there, or say if he wanted to do a fresh install of an OS...Having that extra drive as a backup is very convenient, at least to me it is!

refering to him saying he thought you needed 4 for raid. it is more efficient the way you said.
 
so im definately gonna go w/ a 150 gb raptor. still unsure on whether or not i need another harddrive for space. if i do, anyone reccomend one?

well right now im running a beast w/ a pentium 3 proccesor ( 900 mhz of pure proccesing glory), 348 mb of ram, and a 40gb hard drive. It takes like 2 min for me to minimize something but somehow i got it to install win xp.

if you dont know you probably dont need another hard drive thats my advice. you can always get it later if you need it...probably cheeper then also

im only usin like 12 gb out of a 40 gb harddrive.
but i purposely try to not put anything on there so my comp doesnt get any slower than it already is(I basically only have im, itunes, and firefox) . If i put games and a lot more apps on there will it even make a dent in a 150 gb raptor? I think I might be good with just the raptor. and all i do is set it up like a normal SATA drive. (just plug in and ur good) also, if i buy it off of newegg, its oem so what would i need to buy cords wise to set it up properly. thanx a lot
 
i dont know its a really old computer i think my rents bought it for like 600 bux when i was like 9.
 
its a 2000(so about 6 years old)because it came with windows me which was faulty so I put xp on it when it came out.

what he has will work for a good long while, when time comes to upgrade he will probably get a whole new computer.
 
are u sure it was the gasket? if you had coolant and oil it sounds like the block cracked?

u should rebuild the engine imo

what's the powertrain like? customs parts necessary i bet?
