Question on Fiio e9 Setup

So I am looking into headphone amps and have my eyes set on the e9. But how exactly do I set it up with my desktop? Do I need to have a line in on my sound card? I currently have the XFI titanium Fatal1ty Pro which only has the 5 analog inputs for 7.1 speakers, but thats it. Does the e9 simply go through the USB? Or am I going to need a sound card with line in ports?

You just run the main stereo output (front left/right) from the soundcard to the line in on the amp, set your sound card drivers to stereo, and you're good to go.

The USB connection on the back of it is for use with the FiiO E7 Dac when you pair the two together. Without the E7, the E9 is just a pure headphone amp or inline volume control for other speakers if you use the pre-out. The USB connection doesn't do anything at all if you don't have the E7 to pair with it.

oh ok that makes more sense....one more question....so i have 5.1 speakers hooked up right now to my soundcard....but my front/main speaker has a headphone input....could i go from that output to the line in on the amp to the headphones? that way i can still have my surround sound speakers hooked up as well...is that a proper way to do it?

Um, generally you don't want to put anything else between your soundcard and your amp, but it would work.

But most headphone out on PC speaker sets are noisy and just not very good. If you're going to sink good money into an amp I can't see putting another lesser quality bit of hardware in the middle.

ok...yeah thats what i was thinking too....so do most people that do a desktop amp setup just use headphones without speakers? or is there another way to get both hooked up at the same time? thnx for the help btw

The E9 has both RCA line-out which is a fixed volume that would have to be controlled by your source, and a 1.8mm pre-amp line out that is controlled by the volume knob on the E9. You could hook up an external speaker system either way.
