Question on External hd to Dvr

Recently purchased a Western Digital - My Book Essential 500GB External Hard Drive
Model: WDH1U5000N for my DVR from dish satellite I called it in they say it should be working just wondering if anyone has come across this prob of it not recording or know if I have the wrong external hd. Is there a difference from my book and my passport externals? Any help would be appreciated.
